After potions class, Lily didn't see the boys the rest of the afternoon. She decided to go to the library to kill some time because she wasn't in the mood to socialize. Instead of studying for exams that started the next day, Lily found herself falling into Tales of Beetle and the Bard. Her favorite story was The Fountain of Fair Fortune.
"Hey stranger," Lily didn't look up from her book as she recognized the voice as James Potter.
"Mm," she mumbled as she turned the page and protested when James took the book from her.
"Fountain of Fortune," he observed and handed the book back to Lily who shoved it into her bag as she wouldn't be able to give it her full attention. "Are we still on for later?" James asked and Lily pretended to think.
"Did we make plans?" She asked with a small smile. "Hmm. I don't know. I'm kind of tired. Might just go to bed early," she sighed dramatically.
"Yeah?" James had moved closer and they both leaned on their arms and tilted their head in opposite ways.
"Mhm," Lily mumbled with her mouth closed.
"Maybe I can change your mind," James leaned in slowly and Lily closed her eyes. Just as their lips were about to meet there was a shriek and loud bang from the corridor. "I'm sure it's nothing," James whispered but Lily had already grabbed all her things to go see what happened. "Lily," James quickly followed her. Lily gasped when she saw five Slytherins hanging from the ceiling in a web attached to their foot. Lily looked at James, unamused before waving their wand and cutting them down. She walked off to the common room after one of the first year Slytherin's thanked her.
"Lily come on," James cut in front of her at the portrait hole to stop her from going in.
"Was that the business you had to take care of?" Lily folded her arms and stared up at James. He ran a hand through his hair which answered Lily's question. "I thought you were done with this shit," Lily said exasperatedly and pushed past him to get in the common room.
"I never said that," James followed her and grabbed her wrist to stop her from going up to the girls dorm. "Listen, it was necessary."
"What did that first year do?" Lily demanded and James didn't say anything. "In fact, what did any of them do? I get they're all annoying and rude but that doesn't justify stooping to their level," Lily whisper argued and James sighed exasperated and rolled his eyes.
"Okay fine, the first year didn't deserve it, even if they were hanging out with them, but the rest of them did. Especially Snape," James tried to pull Lily closer but she refused to move.
"You need to stop causing trouble for yourself," Lily said and James dropped her wrist. Lily ignored the pang in her heart as he did and she took a step back.
"You didn't seem to have an issue when I was dueling with Snape when he called you... you know," James shivered a little bit. Lily shook her head and looked at the floor.
"Maybe this was a mistake," she sighed and looked back up at James. She could see something break behind his eyes but he held himself tall. "I just need to be by myself for a while," she sighed and started up the girls stairs. She secretly wanted James to stop her or yell for her to come back so they could talk, but when she looked back, he was gone.
Lily spent the rest of the night in the dormitory and pretended she was asleep when Marlene came in. She could hear Marlene whispering to Alice what had happened between James and Lily. Lily assumed he told Sirius who then told Marlene. The more Lily thought about it, the more unsure she was about everything. I mean, she couldn't expect him to give up pranking all together, could she? What if they just weren't meant to be together? They were so different after all. Lily spent the night tossing and turning which wasn't ideal considering the exams they had the next day.
Lily woke up to Marlene and Alice studying bright and early.
"Hey Lils," Marlene looked up as Lily sat up. She groaned in response and grabbed out her robes from her trunk. "Feeling better today?" Marlene and Lily shrugged. The truth was, she was questioning the entire relationship her and James had. Maybe she shouldn't have rushed into a relationship so soon.
"I'm focusing on exams today," Lily grabbed her bag and her stomach rumbled as she had skipped dinner the night before. "I'll meet you guys in Defense Against the Dark Arts," Lily said and the girls nodded. Lily went down to the great hall and threw her hair up into a bun as she sat down. She pulled out a book and read as she ate.
"Hey," Lily felt someone sit down next to her. She didn't need to look up to see who it was. "Don't tell me you're still mad at me," James sighed and reached over Lily to grab a piece of toast.
"I don't know. I'm focusing on exams today," Lily said shortly, without looking up. "Maybe we rushed into this James," Lily finally looked at him. He had dark bags underneath his eyes which told her he slept about as much as she did.
"You're being too dramatic. Come on, you know we are meant to be together," James said as calmly as possible but there was a hint of panic.
"I don't know. We can talk later. I'm going to class," Lily picked up her bag and felt James grab her hand. It sent a shiver up her arm and she looked back at him. He didn't say anything but his eyes spoke the words he felt. Lily nodded and walked away.
