Lily did her best to keep her distance while still following Severus. He seemed to take random turns, as if he was trying to lose someone. Lily found herself alone on the seventh floor with no sight of Severus. It seemed as if he had just disappeared. Lily looked back where she had come from and then to her left. There was a tapestry of Barnabas the Barney. Lily looked to her right and it was a plain wall.
Before Lily could dwell on it too much, she checked her watch and realized she was almost late for class. She spent the class trying to focus on Professor McGonagall's lecture, but kept glancing at the Slytherin's who were all passing notes. Occasionally she could have sworn that they were staring at her, but when she looked there was no one looking at her. By the end of the lesson, Lily had taken a total of four bullet points for notes. Her mind kept wandering to Severus and James. Lily grabbed her bag and went to turn when she bumped into Severus who mumbled something and hurried out of the classroom.
"Miss Evans, stay back a moment won't you?" Professor McGonagall called. Lily groaned inwardly and sat back in her seat. "Class was quite quiet today, don't you agree?" She narrowed her eyes as the last student had let the door slam shut.
"Yeah," Lily said and Professor McGonagall approached her.
"Do you know where Mr. Potter, Black, or Pettigrew is?" McGonagall sat down next to Lily.
"I think they're just tired from... you know," Lily tried to say a little nonchalantly.
"Interesting," Professor McGonagall nodded. "Mr. Black has skipped occasionally after a full moon. If he doesn't, then he'll sleep in class. Mr. Pettigrew is always in class. Mr. Potter is also almost always in class. Is everything alright? Is Mr. Lupin hurt?"
"No no," Lily shook her head. "James... erm... he's okay. I–"
"The less I know the better," Professor McGonagall interrupted. "I am headed to the lounge to discuss next term with Professor Slughorn," she suddenly stood up and headed towards the door. She had almost completely left the room when there was the noise of a desk drawer opening and a flash of a wand disappeared. Lily got up when the door closed and walked over to the open desk drawer. Inside, she found three chocolate frogs. Lily smiled a little. If only the problems she was having could be fixed by chocolate frogs. She took two of them and pocketed them. Lily picked up her bag and glanced inside. A piece of paper sticking out happened to catch her eye. Lily never kept spare parchment in her bag loose. She took it out and saw two words scribbled in the corner: Vulnera Sanentur. Lily whispered it to herself before putting it back in her bag.
As Lily left the classroom, she debated on going to Care of Magical Creatures or going to check on James. She battled herself on whether she would skip class for a boy.
Boyfriend, Lily reminded herself. And it's not like I ever skip class so I'm sure Professor Kettleburn would even mind.
With that attitude you'll never pass end of year exams. Habits of skipping are hard to break.
Is it even a habit if I just do it once? What if James still isn't up?
What can you do if he isn't up?
On a whim, Lily turned and headed for Gryffindor tower.
"Fairy cream," Lily said to the fat lady who swung open. The common room was empty except for a few fourth years who were studying. Lily made sure they weren't looking at her before disappearing up the boys staircase. When she opened the door, Remus was hovering over James. He was deathly pale and looked exhausted.
"He's still not up?" Lily asked exasperated.
"Lily, he's still bleeding," Remus said quietly and looked at Lily.
"What? That's impossible," Lily said in disbelief and crossed the room. She noticed Sirius looking out the window to avoid looking at James. Sure enough, the blood was bubbling through the stitches in droplets. "How is this real?" Lily murmured and touched James's arm.
"Should we get someone?" Sirius shifted, nervously on his feet.
"No, you'll get in trouble," Remus said softly.
"Who cares if they get in trouble? He's going to bleed out in this state," Lily had to control herself not to yell.
"I'm not talking about detention. I'm talking about Azkaban," Remus sighed tiredly.
"What the hell are you on about?" Lily asked and Sirius and Remus looked at each other. Before either one could say anything, Sirius suddenly changed into a large black dog. Lily did her best not to scream and just let her mouth fall open.
"They're all unregistered animagus's so they can be around me," Remus said and Lily took a seat. "I can only assume James was in that form when he got hurt because this isn't a normal human wound."
"Unless it was done by magic," Lily said slowly and Remus narrowed his eyes a little. "Where's Peter? Did he see anything?"
"Actually, I haven't seen Peter since we went in," Sirius had transformed back into human form.
"So it's possible that he saw what happened," Lily looked at Sirius.
"Unless he was hurt too."
"Something shady is going down between the Sytherins. James and I saw them two nights ago out after curfew, sneaking up to the astronomy towers, and today in class they've all been whispering like they're in some sort of gang," Lily shook her head.
"Death Eaters?" Remus asked and Sirius made a funny noise.
"We're only sixth years, you really think? I mean... some of them are even younger," Sirius said and Lily knew he was thinking about Regulus.
"You think Voldemort cares?" Remus asked and the three of them stayed silent.
"More pressing matters, what are we going to do with Prongs?" Sirius asked and wiped away the other droplets of blood off of his arm.
"It's kind of a long shot, but I found this in my bag. I think it's a spell. I know the first word means vulnerable in Latin," Lily pulled out the paper from her bag. Sirius grabbed it from her and looked at the paper before Remus grabbed it from Sirius who scoffed.
"Who's handwriting is this?" Remus asked and looked up at Lily.
"I don't know," Lily shifted and folded her arms.
"How do we know that this isn't just some Slytherin playing a prank?" Sirius asked, doubtful.
"I guess we don't. We just have to trust. How would they even know James is hurt?" Lily asked and moved next to James. She took the thread of the deepest wound and pulled it out. The blood started pouring out with the same intensity.
"Lily," Sirius sounded panicked but Lily moved her wand over James's gaping wound.
"Vulnera Sanentur," she mumbled and slowly, the blood started to go back into the wound. Lily continued whispering the spell until the skin seemed to fuse back together. She repeated for the other smaller ones until James's arm looked whole again. He, however, still did not open his eyes.
"That was risky," Remus finally said as Lily sat back down.
"It was risky to do nothing too," Lily reminded him and Sirius sat down next to Remus.
"10 galleons a Slytherin did this," he muttered. Lily silently agreed and moved some hair out of James's face.
At least they had the decency to try and fix it, Lily thought to herself and saw Remus looking at her as if he could hear what she was thinking.
"The question is who, and how," Remus said quietly and squeezed Sirius's hand in an attempt to comfort him.
