People would consider me quite an odd individual I assume, with certain features setting me out from the bunch but then again anyone could say the same thing. At my old school kids never quite bullied me as much as phrased things in a way you could tell they were meant to be hurtful.

You see I often voice my opinions loudly and quite publicly which I found out was not taken well by others. But they had finally given up just when my mother had been remarried and moved us to Avonlea.

When my mother woke me this morning I had one thing determined in my head, I was going to be normal. So I put on my dress and shoes and did my hair just the way the girls had done it in my old school with the two pieces connecting in the back. I would usually opt for taming the bedhead a bit and going on my way but, not this year.

When I looked at the clock and saw the time I rushed downstairs, grabbing my basket, and kissing my mother and stepfather on the cheek while wishing them good days. I ran straight out the door and onto the path made from my house to the school. Halfway down the path, I slowed down figuring I would be fine when a cocky-looking young boy came sauntering up next to me.

He looked my way and I avoided eye contact, I can easily tell when I like and dislike a person.

"Hello Miss" He spoke, eyeing much to my dislike

"Hello," I said, glancing at him and focusing back on the path

He laughed "I dare, say you don't like me very much? Which would be odd considering we've never met"

I focused my stare on him and said "Well I'm meeting you right now and your assumptions may be correct"

"I don't care whether you like me or not, you're ugly anyways I was just trying to be polite"

I roll my eyes and with sarcasm lacing my tone I reply "Well great job on that one"

He fumes and snatches my journal out of my basket.

"Well what have we got here 'He held her close, his hand brushing against her-'" He almost finished but I snatched the book back. I'm not a pervert! I just love romance stories and am trying to write one of my own.

"So she's not as much of a prude as she seems," He says grabbing my shoulder and keeping me in place and whispers "I kinda like it"

I cringe when finally a voice comes from behind us saying "Hey Billy, what's going on here"

He let go of me saying "Just welcoming the new girl, Gil"

This 'Gil' responds "Well it looks like she's gotten enough of a welcome from you so why don't you run on ahead and we'll catch up?"

"But-" Billy starts but the boy gives him a look and he clenches his jaw, hastily turning around and heading farther up the path.

I look at the boy who has a comforting aura surrounding him

"I'm Y/N," I say holding out my hand

He returns my hand with the warmth I could sense from his and says "I'm Gilbert, Gilbert Blythe"

We smile at each other for a moment and continue to walk down the path.

I start "So, I assume you go to my school?"

"You assume correct, I promise you not all the people in their areas boisterous as Billy" He replies with that warm smile again.

I chuckle "Trust me, I've dealt with people much worse than him"

"Where did you come from if you don't mind me asking?" He asks

I smile "Concord, Massachusettes"

He seems shocked "That's pretty far, I traveled there once with my father long ago, lovely place"

"Yes, it will probably be ages till I get a letter back from my friend Amy," I say sadly when we've finally made it to the school. There was a group of girls watching us from the window, most in awe, one looking like she wanted to rip my head off and one weeping into her shoulder.

I point to the window "Is she okay?"

Gilbert looks up and gives a light chuckle "That's Ruby, I've been told she has a crush on me but I honestly don't get it. We've barely held an actual conversation"

I look at him "You're brutal"

He shrugs "I tried to be nicer before but she's gotta get over me at some point, she'll find someone much better."

"Well I understand, you do have a bit of a knight in shining armor complex" I joke " Saving damsels in distress"

"Anytime," He says, smiling at me and walking up to the porch then looking over his shoulder and winking at me. I laugh at his antics as he holds the door open for me and we walk inside.
