{Sugar - 1}

You slowly blink the sleep out of your eyes with a groggy groan. Your dog had been running around your bed while yipping loudly for the past ten minutes, and you’re just now finding the energy to pull yourself from the comfort of your warm mattress. “Sugar!” You whisper-yell. “You’re going to get us kicked out of our apartment, you little rascal.” The blankets from your bed were cast aside. The little corgi that ran around your bed eagerly had been blue with black and tan spots, looking like a small Australian shepherd. You found her in an alleyway while on your way home from work rummaging through a broken garbage bag. It had taken all of your strength not to leave her there because you thought you would be reprimanded for not buying, adopting, or legally rescuing her. Your landlord didn’t mind, though, as long as she didn’t soil the carpets.

Your feet carried you to the kitchen. From off the counter, there was a black collar and blue leash that was able to extend when you held a button, though clicked when you released it. You put it around your dog with a smile while ruffling the fur between her ears. She barked at you before sticking her tongue out, panting happily. “Yeah, yeah. You gotta go potty.” You smiled.

You had slept in a heavy dark gray sweatshirt, along with a sports bra and black sweatpants, so there was no reason to really change your attire. The sweatshirt had the word “t-shirt” in Japanese on it in white text. You threw on a pair of black converse and quickly brushed through your hair. Your dog’s brown eyes were focused on the door as she seemed to smile while waiting for you to grab her leash and open the door.

You grab onto the leash after throwing a few things-- your phone, some doggy bags, your keys, a pair of thin black gloves, and a beanie-- into your sweatshirt and pants pockets. Your keys jingled as you fiddled with your lock. It clicked twice before you pulled the keys from the silvery deadbolt. Sugar was at your feet running in circles excitedly as you did all that. “Come on, come on.” You whisper, making it out of the apartment complex. The heavy door of the place fell shut, though you were already down the few concrete steps.

You had brought your phone, but you forgot your earbuds. It was alright, though. You didn’t mind walking around in the late fall because there were very few people actually on the walking paths or at the parks. There were very few people to stop you and gush about how cute your dog was, nor were there many people to ask to pet her. It didn’t bother you when there were children trying to do it, but when it was a grown adult stopping you, a young girl in her early twenties, to pet your dog, it got kind of odd.

Sugar yipped at a few pigeons as you reached inside of your sweatpants. There, you had two blue doggy bags used to pick up whatever waste there was when she decided to stop and use the bathroom. You made a mental note to bring her to a playground area where there was sure to be no kids at this early hour of the morning. It had always been a safe path for you to travel without much interruption, and today seemed like it was going to be a quiet one.

As you turned a path towards the playground, you could hear faint talking. Maybe there were a couple of early joggers on the path or at the small park? The thought of running into anyone else wasn’t what you had really expected. However, you didn’t really have the ambition to try and ignore anyone else today, so you headed for the play area reluctantly.

“Would you get your ass down from there? You’re not supposed to stand on those.” You heard a man shout in a hushed voice. He didn’t seem as though he was mad, but as if he were laughing at someone while saying his words.
