Q&A with Author
Why did you want to write this story?
Well, Season 3 ended, and I had so many questions that the show wouldn't be answering (with a lack of season 4) so I decided to answer them myself. I also wanted to tune into the scariness of Anne and Gilbert's relationship. They had that moment before leaving suddenly, I wanted to go into the initial awkwardness of them meeting again and how they decipher their emotions after that.
How did you decide the type of relationship that Anne and Gilbert were going to have?
I tried to think about what typical things they would say, and typical ways of reacting to certain scenarios. So usually when Anne is excited, she will squeal or act in a very dramatic way. She shows her emotions in anything that she doses so I tried to follow that mindset. The Gilbert in the series mainly raises his eyebrow or smirks so that was also interesting to see. With Gilbert though, in Season 2 we kind of saw a glimpse of him getting a letter from Anne and reading it (unlike season 3's letters) so I tried to imagine how he would react to that – in that sense. I re-watched episodes too.
Did you follow the original Anne of Green Gable's storyline?
Spoiler alert!
With Gilbert getting sick – yes. I felt that how the storyline was progressing, Anne needed something to reaffirm her feelings for Gilbert, and the thought of almost losing him seemed like a good wakeup call for her. Of course, Gilbert is in Avonlea in the book, but the basic 'Gilbert gets sick' was inspired by the story.
Mathew is alive! – In Anne with an E, he is my FAVOURITE character, so I could not kill him. That was just something I couldn't handle. So, Mathew is as fit as a fiddle but still struggles with old age and wanting to do too much on the farm.
How do traditional gender roles of the time fit into your book?
As the intro song suggests 'Ahead by a century' I knew that Anne would not give up working when she got married. I think that even when she has kids, she will find a way to pursue something more. I thought it would be fitting that part of Anne's character development, is that she starts writing about her own life and happiness rather than that of her imagination (Sorry Princess Cordelia). So I was super excited when I thought about that.
You ended the wedding scene with Gilbert touching Anne's hair, what was that about?
Well in Season 1 Episode 1, one of the main things was about how Anne 100% hated her hair, so I wanted to bring that back and give her some hair-love. I went through a similar story with my hair, so I really wanted to give Anne a moment where she was proud of all of her.
What else are you going to do with this story?
I am giving them an epilogue! Because the series didn't do it, so I will! Tune in for that!
