Over the next few days, Max spent as much time as he could with the Rabbu Snowball. He had made a saddle so he could ride on the dragon and use a rope to open the tail fin. There were some setbacks but it helped the teen learn what needed to be fixed. He also found ways to do well in training.

After they had crashed in a grassy field, Max noticed that Snowball was acting strange. The Rabbu was rolling around and purring. Naming the grass dragon nip, Max brought some to class. That day, the group was facing the Tabikat again. The bluish gray dragon was rushing towards the young Viking at full speed. Max quickly held up the dragon nip. The beast immediately stopped attacking and sniffed the plant. It purred and rolled over, acting like a giant cat.

Later on, Max was hanging out with Snowball again. He was scratching the dragon when he got him under the chin. The Rabbu collapsed and purred, looking very content. The youngest Terrierson took this piece of information to his next class, where they had to face a very timid Panthera. Unlike the other dragons they had to face, the colossal beast didn't go on the attack and even hid behind Max. Noticing that the girls were running towards them with weapons drawn, he acted quickly and scratched the Panthera under the chin, causing it to collapse on the ground purring.

Once again with Snowball, Max used a piece of metal to reflect the sunlight so the dragon could play. In training, the group was now faced with a Terrifying Parakeen the size of a giant otter. Buddy was laughing his head off when the beast lunged forward and bit his nose. While everyone else scattered, Max used the metal on his shield to reflect the sunlight and lure the tiny dragon back into its cage. By now, he had become a celebrity on the island Bark. Everyone was talking to him and congratulating him. The entire village even watched him during training. Long story short, Max was grateful when he went to see Snowball so he could get away from the crowds.

In the meantime, Max believed it was almost time to see if the Rabbu would be able to fly once again.
