It was in the year 2017 when Song Soo-jin first met Na Jaemin.
Soo-jin, 18 at that time, transferred to a new university as a college Freshman and everything was just new to her.
As soon as she stepped inside the campus, students were rummaging along the corridors looking for their designated stalls to get their department IDs.
Luckily she found hers.
"All freshmen under performing arts! Please gather in here!" One of their department's student leader called out.
She took the courage and went closer all by herself while other students come in groups.
"Hello~ Name please." A girl said.
"Song Soo-jin." She said with a smile.
"Whay a beauty." She whispered.
"Sorry, what is it?" Soo-jin asked.
"Oh nothing~ Here's your ID. Please feel free to join our student council if you're interested." She replied.
Soo-jin nodded and quickly left.
"We'll be expecting!" She added and Soo-jin smiled awkwardly.
She was feeling left behind her classmates because she felt as if she couldn't fit in anyone's group.
She sighed and walked quietly to her class.
It was just her 1st day so she tried so hard not to feel bad for herself for not having friends around.
But while she was listening music on her phone with her earphones on, she was bothered by ladies who were murmurring behind her back.
"I know. I won't even want to try getting close to her." A girl said and her group agreed.
"I heard she used other people's dance choreography and claimed it to be hers." Another scoffed.
"But did they have evidence??" A girl asked.
"With evidence or not, I still couldn't believe she had the guts to continue studying. It's a shame on our department." She added.
Soo-jin furrowed her eyebrows and looked at the girl who seemed to be the topic of the rumors. It was the girl seated a few seats beside her and she was staring at the floor the whole time.
The rumored girl wanted to defend herself but that might make things worse for her so she kept silent.
Soo-jin stood and sat beside her which made the girl surprised.
"Wear this." She said as she offered the other end pair of her earphones.
"It's o-okay." The girl awkwardly said.
"Come on. It'll be helpful." Soo-jin insisted.
The girl gulped and took the other end.
"Thank you." She whispered.
The girls behind her wondered who Soo-jin was and they mocked her for sitting beside the girl of the rumors.
She hated her 1st day even more because they had to introduce themselves one by one.
For. Each. Class.
It was that monday, the first day of her hell week.
"Hello. I'm Kim Eun Kyung." The girl beside Soo-jin shyly introduced.
"Ohhh~ pathetic. let's see what she got." The girl seated behind her whispered and they giggled.
She felt bad because of it because their group was caught laughing at her and her teacher seemed not to be bothered.
That's when she started heating up. She cleared her throat.
"Have some respect, will you?" She bravely muttered as she glanced at the girls behind her.
Eun Kyung held her arm and shook her head, signalling her that she should just shrug it off.
The girls behind her back chuckled in disbelief.
"What did you just said?" A girl scoffed.
"Who do you think you are, huh?" She added.
"Enough." Her professor said.
"Since I guess you're curious about me when you really shouldn't, I'd be glad to introduce myself. Can I, ma'am?" She said as her eyes were stuck to the group who were caught laughing earlier. Their eyes couldn't meet hers.
They felt uncomfortable because of everyone's stares.
"G-go ahead." The professor said as she fixed her eyeglasses.
They were shocked to see her speak because they all thought she was just a shy girl with a pretty face.
After hours of tolerating their nasty gossips, Soo-jin knew it had to stop.
"Hello everyone, I'm Song Soo-jin. It'd be really nice to meet all of you. Uhm I don't know where to start but I personally believe that respect begets respect. No matter what circumstances may be." She said.
All of those who laugh at her kept silent.
She turned to their direction and pierced them a steady stare.
"Pathetic? Do you really have to look down on someone based on your groundless rumors?" She chuckled.
Everyone agreed while Eun kyung shed tears in silence.
"Do you have an evidence? If yes, then show us." She added.
The girls kept nudging each other.
"Ah! One last thing. Making fun of other people's misery will never pull you up, remember that." She said as she calmly took her seat.
She wanted to curse at them but she decided to keep her emotions within cause she knew she was vulnerable in everyone's eyes.
"It's okay, Eun Kyung. It'll be alright." Soo-jin whispered as she held her hand.
Once the bell rang, everybody was so quick to leave school and there she walked quietly all by herself.
After class, everyone was having their snacks and most of them enjoyed half shared refreshing popsicles and laughter.
"Looks fun." She smiled to herself.
She had no friends to share popsicles with.
She was just looking from a far watching them enjoy their time.
Just when she was starting to feel down, a guy approached her and gave her something.
"You can have it, i don't want it anymore." He said.
She was happy someone approached her after a long day. But her expression changed when she saw a weird thing.
He handed her a used popsicle stick...
"A trash?" She whispered to herself.
She looked at the guy and fake smiled as she awkwardly took it from him.
He smiled and left.
She weirdly looked at the popsicle stick he gave and turned out it had some printed writings on the other side.
'Free 1 popsicle'
Her face lit up. She was surprised.
"Hey-thanks." She called out. But the guy was too far to hear.
She smiled and held the popsicle stick close to her heart as she stared at him until he was out of her sight.
"Thank you, stranger. You made my terrible day tolerable."
He sure was, her serendipity in disguise.
