"Aliya?" Jake breathed, as if he couldn't believe what his eyes were seeing.
"It's me Jake," I smiled. "I'm here."
I don't know what I expected him to do. I guess I thought he'd run up to me maybe, or he'd smile and not know what to say. Really I thought he'd do anything other than what he did next. He turned his back and went back to work.
I stood there in surprise for a moment not knowing what to do. I mean what the hell?
"Umm not even a hello?" I scoffed, eyebrows furrowed.
"Nope," he deadpanned not bothering to even turn around and face me.
"Are you seriously gonna ignore me like that?" I said in disbelief as tears started to well up in my eyes threatening to spill over. I thought he loved me.
"Yep," he answered flatly, hammering in another nail.
"Jake, turn around. Please," I sobbed my voice breaking.
He paused hanging his head low and sighing. "Why should I? All I'm going to do his hurt you all over again by getting close to you. I think it's best you leave."
"I'm not going anywhere!" I demanded, my vision blurry now.
He turned around now to face me angrily. "I SAID LEAF ME ALONE!"
I couldn't help but snicker slightly as did he. However, the memory of the first time he said that to me only made me cry harder. He turned back around now "It's time you go home."
"I already told you! I'M NOT LEAVING!" I cried storming up to him and pulling on his muscular shoulder to make him look at me.
He faced me but could barely make eye contact. I began to notice tears of his own forming but he was quick to try and find them.
"Aliya please, don't make this harder than it already is. I can't risk hurting you again. It's my fault you were in that stinking coma in the first place." he whispered.
"Jake, shut up, you're NOT going to hurt me," I soothed.
"Yes I AM. That's what I do best. Just like my father," he sobbed, a tear streaming down his face now.
Look at us both, a pair of criers, who knew.
"No if anyone is going to hurt me it's ME. I'm just a clumsy, blubbering, no good, clutz who no one could ever love," I sighed now breaking our intense eye contact.
"That's not true Aliya. Don't say such things," he urged holding my face in his hands.
Droplets of rain began to fall faster, misting over us creating a cool sensation on my skin, contrasted with the heat from his fingertips.
"Don't say what things?" I said with a sniffle.
"That no one loves you," he said faintly, entrancing me in his emerald eyes.
"Who?! Who loves me?" I sighed, hoping he would tell me how he really felt about me.
"Well..." he began looking away awkwardly.
"Yes?" I pushed.
"Your mum loves you," he finished with a small smile.
"Oh, yeah um, I guess you're right," I said backing away from his touch in disappointment.
I think he could sense how I felt as he continued, "And not just her! Everyone loves you Aliya! You're amazing!" He added, trying to comfort me as he stroked my arm. I flinched away from him.
He looked almost...hurt.
"Everyone in the whole world could love me and it wouldn't change a thing!" I groaned in annoyance.
