19 - JOEL

"If we're going to your place can you at least buy me food?" Nina whined, picking up her pace to catch up to Joel.

Joel sucked his teeth as he unlocked his car. "Is McDonald's good for you?"

"Yes. Literally please."

Joel was determined to help Christopher out with Nina. He had noticed how different Chris had started to act around him and it had started to get to Joel. Of course, now knowing the reason, Joel felt like this was new. He had never seen Christopher so jealous or so interested in a girl before. In the two weeks that he had spent with Nina, he could tell she was nice girl. She wasn't like the girls Christopher had gone with before– no – Nina actually knew what she wanted. Maybe she was the one who could change his friend.

"What do you want?" Joel asked as they neared the drive-thru.

"McChicken, medium fries and three chocolate chip cookies, please," she said sweetly, batting her eyes at him.

Joel scoffed with a smile. "Are you sure you want just one McChicken? I think you should get two."

Nina shyly smiled. "I feel bad if I make-"

"I'm getting you two." Joel stated, pulling up to the window.

Joel ended up ordering the same as Nina but getting two twenty pieces for Zabdiel and Christopher and two large fries. He didn't have to ask if they wanted anything. Joel knew they'd start whining even if they have already eaten. As they waited for the line to move, Joel grabbed his phone and decided to notify Chris that he was coming with Nina. Knowing Chris, he was probably in his jammies with his usual greasy hair.

"Joel?" Nina waved her hand in front of his phone. "The line is moving."

"Whoops."

The distance from McDonald's to Joel's place wasn't far which was an advantage. No cold fries.

"Are you sad?" Nina asked out of the blue as she looked out the window.

"Why would I be sad?"

Joel stopped at the red light while Nina dramatically turned to him and sighed. "It's our last day of working together. We will no longer be partners."

Joel laughed. "You loser. I thought you were gonna say something else."

"So you aren't sad?"

"No," Joel said. "It's not like we're gonna stop talking. We're friends now. Aren't we?"

Though he didn't see it, a slight red tint rose to Nina's cheeks. She timidly smiled and nodded. "Yeah, we are."
