Katniss POV- (The next week)
My mother is arriving any minute on the train from District Four. While I'm anxious to see her, part of me regrets begging her to come the other day. It happened in a moment of weakness but I needed her and maybe this is the opportunity we need to grieve together and restore parts of our relationship that we never thought possible. All I know is, it's going to be mighty hard to hide how horrible I really am doing without her. If it weren't for Greasy Sae's meals and daily drop-ins, I would have been dead months ago.
Haymitch and I have been visiting each other a lot lately. Both of us lonely and in need of a friend and desperate apparently. We talk about all kinds of things. My parents. Peeta. Gale. My sister. His family and friends. The Games. The War. You name it and Haymitch and I aren't shy, but have we ever been when it comes to each other?
I talked to Haymitch about my mother's visit and he thinks it will be good for us. He said it's time we both stop being so stubborn and allow each other back in. I would have to agree with him on that, restoring our relationship is long overdue. I need to stop blaming her for things out of her control. It is hardly a comparison since we were never married and my love for him has been questionable but look at what happened when the Capitol took Peeta from me. I did exactly what my mother did, if not worse. Well, the only way it could've been worse was if I had two of our children to abandon too, but I just abandoned myself. My mother and I may be very different but we are so much alike, in the worst ways. I'm just hoping I don't regret this visit.
Haymitch agreed to walk with me to the train station to greet her so I'm going over to his house now to bring him along. I knock on his front door and a few seconds later, Peeta opens it. "Hey." He says softly.
I swallow hard, "Hey, I'm here for Haymitch. He's suppose to come with me to the train station..."
"Are you going somewhere?" Peeta asks, sounding a little disappointed he might not have been invited.
"No, just going to the train station to bring my mother home."
My heart is pounding out of my chest. This is our first true encounter in weeks. His eyes light up in happiness for me, "Katniss, that's great news. She's finally coming home?"
"Just visiting but it's a step in the right direction, I suppose. Is Haymitch up yet?" I ask.
Peeta looks back, "He's pretty wasted right now and is not in a very good humor. Why don't I just go with you to the train station?" He suggests.
I look down, about to reject his offer when Haymitch comes teetering over to the door. He's definitely gone. I roll my eyes. "Perfect idea." Haymitch smirks.
"You promised me you would come with me today." I scold him.
"Sorry, Sweetheart. Nightmares were bad last night...I think you need to take our good buddy Peeta here up on his offer. He smells better than me anyways." Haymitch slurs, leaning on Peeta for support.
Peeta and I exchange glances. "Everyone smells better than you, Haymitch." Peeta teases him.
"True but I still think you should be the one to walk Katniss to the train station."
"Get off of him and we will be on our way then." I tell Haymitch. He gives me a very obvious and stupid looking wink as he makes his way back to his kitchen table.
Peeta shakes his head and closes the door behind him, joining me on the porch. "I was just about to bring over some fresh bread and cheese buns. I can bring it to you when we get back."
"Thank you. My mother will be excited to have your baking again for a few days. She isn't very fond of District Four's bread...she said it's too salty." I tell him truthfully.
