Jasmine's POV
I sat curled up on the sofa in front of the fireplace as Tony put the last of the cutlery in the dishwasher. I heard the clunk of the machine as he closed it and I breathed out a sigh, pulling a blanket over me. Tony and I had been dating for just under two months and I honestly didn't know where I saw it going. He was quite attractive - he had a sharp jawline and grey-brown eyes. His thick, dark brown hair was always styled and suited his face well.
I heard him walking over to join me and my phone flashed with a reminder.
10 mins till shift (11pm-9am)
I groaned, noticing Tony looking at me confused in the corner of my eye.
"My shift starts soon, I should get going." I said, my eyes still on the fireplace. I sighed again, making a move to get up when I felt his hand on my arm. I looked over at him expectantly.
"At least stay for a glass of wine." He said, reaching into a small cabinet and producing two wine glass.
"Tony, you know I have to work. I can't exactly do operations, if I need to, when I've had a drink. Even if I'm not drunk it's still not a good idea. Plus I have to drive-" I felt myself rambling until I was stopped by a glass being thrust towards me.
I looked at Tony incredulously, this guy really didn't get it. "Tony no. I have to go to work." I placed the blanket on the sofa and picked my boots from beside the door, pulling them on. I grabbed my coat and bag that was hanging next to the door. Rummaging in my bag for my keys, I swiftly opened the front door and began to leave the house.
"Of course. Work always come first." He half-yelled, ensuring I heard it. Slowly I turned around, seeing him looking at me with his eyebrows raised. I rubbed my forehead, an unimpressed look on my face.
"Are you seriously bringing this up? Again? We've been over this, I have an important job so I'm sorry if I don't want to drink with you before I leave" I said, sounding more bitter than I meant to. This is the third time he's brought up my job in the past week and it wasn't even Friday.
"You always do this. You always use work as an excuse. Is work always going to come before me? Actually you know what, just leave." He breathed out, running his hands through his dark hair.
"You're the one who brought it up and now you're telling me to leave? Wow, ok." I was in no mood to deal with him. He's always had this idea that I didn't want to spend time with him and used work to get out of it. And whenever I tried to show him it wasn't, he just wouldn't hear it. I closed the door behind me and headed to my car, fumbling with the keys. I sunk into the seat after closing the door a little harder than I needed to. I sat and stared at the wheel, feeling stressed and tired already.
Coffee. That's my solution.
I was covering Jake's shift and working graveyard hours was never fun in A&E. The nap I took that afternoon was helping but I still felt tired and Tony was not helping. I shook my head, forcing myself awake and put my keys in the ignition. I drove towards the hospital, turning the radio on but keeping it low, just loud enough to distract me. I hummed along to the music and drove peacefully. The hand that was not on the steering wheel found its way to the necklace that I always wore around my neck. It was given to me by my grandma when I turned 16, she used to wear it everyday. She passed away a few weeks before I turned 17 - I wish she was still here, she was always comforting, she helped raise me and she always gave me good advice. Whenever I was in deep thought, my mind would drift to her.
