Draco witnessed the usually fierce Anna Stone turning pale at his comment and avoiding eye contact with him. He was close enough to her to notice her hands slightly shaking.
"I have given you an answer, Malfoy", she replied dryly. Draco circles around her with his arms crossed, observing her every move, like a vulture. He was no fool. Stone was hiding something. A dark secret that Draco wanted to uncover very badly. No wizard has ever changed schools simply because they asked. There are only two possibilities of this ever happening to someone. Dismissal from the former school, or agreement between the headmasters and the Ministry due to exceptional circumstances. Draco could have some real fun teasing her as soon as he discovered the truth, only enough to see her that cute scowl forming on her face and hear her feisty comeback to him.
"A not very convincing one" Draco sneered at her unconsciously, his imagination running wild. Stone stood in front of him and any traces of fear and embarrassment of hers were now lost.
"That is the one I've got, Malfoy" she said sternly. Two can play that game, Draco thought and smirked.
"I will find out one day, Stone" he said and she glared at him, her cheeks flushing. Although Draco was enjoying toying with her, he wanted to keep his promise and be nice to her. "Until then, I will move on to the next question. Have you got any siblings?" Stone seemed relieved for the change of the subject, but Draco could clearly see a hint of sadness in her eyes.
"Yes...I mean no...not anymore...I had a sister but s-she...died when I was eleven" Draco felt his heart sinking. His playful sle faded and he lowered his head, his eyes focused on the wooden floor. He had no siblings, but the terrifying thought of his parents dying haunted his mind once more. Until a year ago, death was not something he had to deal with or even think about. Now he felt it constantly surrounding him, ready to strike at any time, Stone must have lost a part of her soul when her sister died. Draco always thought that was the case when losing a loved one. Her sister...Draco would have never thought that Stone had experienced such a loss. She always seemed so lively and having a positive outlook for life. For the first time, Draco did not know what to say to her.
"I...I am sorry to hear that" he ended up saying, unable to hide the gloomy tone in his voice. Stone turned around and looked at him, frowning in disbelief.
"Are you?"
"Yes. Truthfully" Draco tried to convinced her he was sincere. He should not care what she thinks of him, but he felt it was important she knew he is consoling her for her sister's death. Hatred aside, he knew how much she should have hurt in her life. And possibly still hurting. These scars never go away. "I don't know what I would do if my parents ever..." Draco's voice trailed off and he gulped. Stone stared at the wall next to him blankly and sighed.
"You know Malfoy...I might not agree with most things you do or say, but I can't help but noticing how loyal and devoted you are to your parents. I really like that about you. No matter what, you always defend them, love and admire them. You always follow them, their traditions and beliefs because you want to see them happy and proud. I feel the same for my family. Even though..." her voice broke. Draco sat on a study bench and invited Stone to sit next to him. She hesitated but took a seat. As soon as she did, he felt heat radiating from his body, but he ignored it.
