LOST

When I got off the bus today I slipped on the sidewalk. So when I got home and walked in, my mom didn't notice that I was drenched head to toe in slush. She gave me a sad look and motioned for me to sit by her at the dinning room table.

She looked like she had been crying, adding evidence to my theory was the box of tissues on the counter.

Mom: "Freya, honey, Kate lost the baby."

Mom's lip trembled and she broke into tears. I was shocked into silence, but that more or less seemed normal for me.

Kate lost the baby. Victor, my cousin, his girlfriend, Kate, lost the baby.

Me: "How?"

My voice trembled, I really wished it hadn't.

Mom: "She was in a car accident."

Mom continued to sob. She grabbed a handful of tissues and blew her nose and dabbed at her eyes.

I slowly moved away from her and toward the door where Peanut stood. I figured he needed to be walked so I hooked on his leash and we left.

We walked for a good long hour and all I could think about was Victor. I knew he was terrified that he knocking his girlfriend up, but when you got down to it, he was so excited. He'd even planned on purposing to Kate once the baby was born. Everyone was giddy about the possibility of a wedding soon. Victor loved Kate and loved their little girl they were going to have, even if the initial news had knocked him on his ass. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Any of it.

Evelyn's mother, Lola's mother, Kate's miscarriage . . . Ainsley and what I did to her. Why couldn't something good happen? For once why couldn't something turn out the way we wanted? Why?

Not sure if you remember in the Christmas Eve chapter when I mentioned Kate having pregnancy issues. But I did not just pull this idea out of thin air.
