LOLA'S BURDEN

I was hiding out in the art classroom during lunch. Surprisingly Lola had met me there. We didn't talk much, just usual greetings. She seemed off, but I was almost positive I didn't care enough to ask her.

As I thought I realized how mean that was. How mean I was to Lola all the time. She was only ever nice to me and I was, well, cold most of the time. Not that I could really help it. I've never been very social, it's always taken a boost to get me out of my shell. But these days I was farther held up in my shell then I've ever been before. I knew exactly why and it didn't seem like it would ever stop. The minute I thought I could at least peek out I'd I always be shut back in.

Lola: "Freya?"

Me: "Hmm?"

I hummed in response, not really looking up at her.

Lola: "Can we talk?"

Me: ". . ."

I nodded, still not bothering to look away from the paint covered table.

Lola: "It's been really hard lately thinking by about Evelyn. What happened to her mom, it reminds me of what happened to mine. Grant it, we don't know what happened to her mother, but I can't help but think of mine. I've never actually spoken about what happened to her with anyone and with you, Freya, I feel like I can tell you . . . anything."

Me: ". . ."

I nodded once again, encouraging her to go on.

Lola: "My mother died too, when I was eight. It was a real slippery day and I was sick with the flu. So I stayed at home while mom went to go get some cold medicine. When she was crossing the street a car spun out and hit her. I was home and she never came back. Martin has always blamed me for it too. He doesn't say or show it, but I know he resents me for it. I think dad does to, but he'd never admit to it. Thinking about Evelyn has brought back some bad memories."

Me: ". . ."

I didn't know what to say, I never do. So I kept quiet and wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulders. It was the best I could do.

Lola: "Thanks for listening, Freya. It really feels like a weight has been lifted from my chest."

Lola gave my a bright smile. It looked rather creepy with her two bottom piercings sticking out. But I shook off the weird feeling and gave her a small smile back.
