"I want a love like Darcy and Elizabeth."
m a i s y

My eyes skimmed a page of the great classic "pride and prejudice" for what seemed like the millionth time. It never got old, and every word made my heart want to leap out of my chest, I ached for a romance like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.

"Oh Marian you won't even believe what I read yesterday, it was honestly one of the most fascinating things. Did you know cats can't taste anything sweet! Maybe that's why they're always so grumpy." I explained.

She let out an amused laugh, "My dear, if that's what you find most fascinating, than you really haven't lived. "

"Well maybe it wasn't most fascinating, but it's certainly interesting enough." I mumbled returning the book to its proper place.

She set down the few books she was signing back in and looked at me with sad eyes, "I know how hard it is being an only child, how hard it is living in a smaller town like this, but you are not very far from adventure. A couple miles and it's like you've found yourself a new world, a new scene, a new crowd."

She had no idea, "My father won't even allow me to go to the city, not until I'm eighteen. Even then it might be a stretch. I love him so so much. Really, I do, it's just sometimes I can't help but feel he's setting me up for failure. If I don't know what the world is like, if I don't get it in early doses now, one day it will swallow me whole. Ya know?"

That was my largest fear of all- failure, not being good enough, rejection. That's why I  rarely put myself out there, I don't think I cope all that well with failure either.

If you don't try you can fail, that's just fact.

She nodded,"I understand, being held back isnt easy. Sometimes it makes you rebellious but Maisy you are an angel. You've done nothing in spite. You truly are a good girl, maybe one day we can take a trip up to the city. Just for a few hours or so, during the day, under my supervision. What do you say? It can be our secret" she smiled.

"And mine." Said Zayn coming back with Chinese takeout bags on each arm.

"Finally, I thought I was gonna have to eat my arm if you didn't come back in the next three minutes" I laughed, "and I would love that Marian"

"Ya know you wouldn't even possibly be able to, you couldn't even eat your own finger. Even though it would be as hard as biting a carrot, the brain just sends neurological sensor messages making you think differently...isn't that interesting?" Zayn gloated.

I scowled, "Zayn everyone knows that, we learned that in like third grade."

Just then Marian's laughter filled the room, reflecting off the walls, "what is it with you kids, have you no life, these weird facts. I'm seriously wondering why I allow you two to chat with me." She said eating a bite of the shrimp fried rice.

Zayn waved a hand at her, "Oh shush, you know we make your day. It's too quiet in here, and plus you'd be lonely without us. You need us just as much as we need you."

"It's true Marian" I added, "plus this is where all the cool kids hang out now a days."

I put a record labeled bluegrass on. Turning up the volume softly. Just then the room filled with one of my favorite tunes, my favorite genres layered between blue grass and alternative. I didn't really have to put on the music, but it filled the very small gaps of silence we had while talking.
