1st January, 2012
The party continued downstairs until the wee hours of the morning, everyone counting in the New Year. Everyone, that is, except the host. Katy cried herself to sleep in the arms of her sister, mother and best friend and was out like a light before midnight. Angela, Mary and Shannon decided to leave her to sleep and go and rejoin the party, all three of them slightly more subdued than earlier. They spread word around the party that Katy had gone up to bed as she wasn’t feeling well, which in all honesty wasn’t too far from the truth. She was feeling terrible, in fact.
Katy woke up early on New Year’s Day. Well, relatively early for her, anyway. It was just before eight o’clock in the morning, when she awoke and tried to force her sore, swollen eyes open. For a minute, she sat up and looked around the room, noticing Shannon sprawled across the other side of the bed, taking up most of the space as usual, and looked down, confused as to why she was still in her dress from last night.
‘How much did I drink last night?’ she wondered momentarily, before the realisation hit her like a ton of bricks. She let out a small involuntary gasp and clutched her hands to her chest, tears immediately appearing in her eyes.
“Oh my god…” she whispered, scrambling for her phone on the bedside table in the hope that the memory was just a bad dream. She unlocked the phone with fumbling fingers and there it was on the screen right in front of her, still open to the message from the night before.
Katy whimpered like a small child, unsure whether she was about to start crying, hoping she could take some deep breaths and calm herself down, when Angela opened the bedroom door and poked her head into the room.
At the mere sight of her sister, Katy broke down again, and Angela rushed into the room, pulling Katy into her arms as Shannon stirred beside them, awoken by the sudden noise.
“Shhh, shhh, Kate sweetie, we’re here, okay?” cooed Angela, rocking her baby sister as she cried.
“I-I woke up and forgot! Then I thought it was a dream! B-but it wasn’t!” Katy cried.
“I know, honey, I know,” Angela soothed. “Cry it out sweetie, we aren’t going anywhere.”
Katy nodded and buried her face in Angela’s shoulder, reaching one hand out to grasp onto Shannon’s hand, needing to feel the love and support from her best friend as well as her sister.
Katy’s routine for the first few days of 2012 was no different to how she spent New Year’s Day. She alternated between sleeping and crying, all day and all night. Occasionally she would eat, but only when forced to by Angela, Shannon or Tamra. She hadn’t spoken to Russell at all. He had tried calling her multiple times but she was unable to answer through her tears, and eventually threw her phone at the wall in anger and frustration, smashing the screen to pieces.
After almost a week, Tamra finally convinced Katy to get out of bed and start training again to go back on tour. Reluctantly, Katy got up and headed for the shower. She was a little unsteady on her feet while showering, as the longest she’d been out of bed all week was to use the toilet. Katy placed her hand on the shower wall to steady herself as she experienced an intense dizzy spell, her head spinning nauseatingly. Then, before she had time to comprehend what was happening, she vomited onto the shower floor.
The loud sound of retching echoed in the four small walls of the shower, causing Tamra to hear the noise from Katy’s bedroom. Concerned, she burst into the bathroom, catching sight of Katy hunched over, clutching her stomach as she vomited.
“Katy?” Tamra asked, worried for her friend.
Katy looked up, trying to cover her naked self with her hands. “Tamra! What are you doing in here? I’m showering!”
Tamra smirked. “It’s nothing I haven’t seen before, sweets. Are you sick? I heard you throwing up so I came to check on you.”
“I don’t know,” Katy replied miserably. “I felt fine before, it just came on really quickly.”
“That’s weird…” frowned Tamra. “Well I’ll leave you to finish your shower, okay? I’ve just got to pop out for a bit, I’ll be back in about twenty minutes,”
Katy nodded as Tamra left the room. She finished her shower and had just finished drying herself off when her chest heaved and she sprinted to the toilet to throw up again. Tears stung in her eyes as she wrapped her arms around the toilet bowl, retching miserably over and over again as her stomach brought up everything she had eaten in the last couple of days.
Katy lay down on the floor next to the toilet, exhausted from being so violently sick. She rested her cheek on the floor as she lay down, relishing the feel of the cold tiles on her warm face. ‘This fucking sucks,’ Katy thought to herself.
