Katy lay anxiously in her hospital bed for the next twenty minutes, her eyes closed as she ran through all the horrible scenarios that could happen in her mind. Shannon sat silently next to the bed, trying to work up the courage to say something. She felt incredibly guilty for not telling the doctors about Katy’s pregnancy, but at the time her first thought had been for her best friend’s health and wellbeing.

“Kate?” she began hesitantly, reaching out a hand and touching Katy’s arm with her fingertips.

“Mmm?” Katy replied, not opening her eyes.

“I’m really sorry…” Shannon said humbly, trying not to cry. Katy heard Shannon’s voice tremble slightly and turned to look at her.

“I know,” whispered Katy. “I’m sorry for getting angry at you, it’s not really your fault. I just freaked out. I hope nothing’s wrong…”

“Me too,” replied Shannon, reaching for Katy’s hand. “I’ll never forgive myself if something has happened to your baby because of my stupid mistake, Kate.”

“Don’t say that,” cried Katy, shaking her head in defiance. “Don’t!”

Shannon moved from her chair to sit on the edge of the hospital bed, and leaned over to hug her best friend. They remained like that in silence until the doctor returned with a machine on wheels.

“Katy, I’ve looked through your notes and the medication we gave you, and it doesn’t seem like there is anything that could be contraindicated with your pregnancy, however we are going to do a quick ultrasound scan to make sure everything is okay,” said the doctor, and Katy’s relief was evident as she sighed.

“That’s fine, thankyou so much.”

“May I ask, how far along are you?” the doctor asked.

Katy paused for a moment. “Actually… I’m not too sure,” she said thoughtfully. “I haven’t had a scan yet, I’ve got an appointment booked for when I get home. But if I’d have to guess, I’d say about eight weeks? I’ve known for just over two weeks…” She looked at Shannon for confirmation, who nodded in agreement.

“Well we’ll do a scan now just to check the baby’s health, and I can roughly let you know how far along you are if you’d like.”

“Yes, please,” Katy smiled nervously. She was excited to finally see her baby for the first time, but still a little worried that something was wrong.

“Ok, this will be a little cold at first,” warned the doctor, lifting up Katy’s hospital gown and squirting some gel onto her stomach.

Katy flinched a little then giggled, squeezing Shannon’s hand tightly in anticipation.

The doctor moved the transducer around for a minute, until he stopped in a certain spot. “There’s your baby, Katy,” he smiled at the look of awe plastered on Katy’s face.

Shannon watched her best friend as she saw a picture of her baby for the very first time.

“Oh my God,” Katy whispered, stunned.

“And I think you’re a little further along than you thought, look like you’re almost twelve weeks.”

Both Katy’s and Shannon’s eyes widened as they looked at each other.

“Twelve weeks? That’s three months already!” said Katy, extremely surprised.

The doctor nodded. “Because you’re obviously a slim woman, and you’re very fit from all the touring you do, it’s not unusual that you’re further along than you thought without showing symptoms until later than most women might.”

Shannon piped up then. “This is a good thing, Kate! It means it’ll take longer for the press to notice your baby bump.”

“That’s true…” agreed Katy, watching as the doctor wiped the gel off her stomach.

“Okay Katy, everything looks great, your baby is healthy, so you can go home as soon as I sign your discharge papers.”

“Great, thankyou for everything!” said Katy, sitting up and swinging her legs over the edge of the bed.

The doctor left the room and Katy got changed into the clothes Tamra had dropped off while she was still asleep, meanwhile Shannon was texting Tamra letting her know to send a car to pick them up from the hospital.

“You know,” mused Shannon. “You finished your whole world tour last night. We need to celebrate when we get home!”

Katy rolled her eyes. “Sure, Shannon. You can plan something, as long as you take into account the fact that I’m pregnant and can’t do certain things, including consuming alcohol.”

Shannon pouted. “Oh yeah. That’s no fun…”

“I’m sure you’ll think of something fun,” laughed Katy.

Shannon’s eyes lit up. “I know! We’ll have a party for just your closest friends and family, with no alcohol allowed! And we can mix up a whole heap of mocktails and get non-alcoholic champagne!”

“Sounds good! You can plan everything, but we’re having it at my house so I can go and crash in my own bed if I get too tired, which is quite likely,” Katy said.

“Deal!” Shannon immediately picked up her phone and started texting Markus, telling him the plan. He was, of course, on board immediately.

“Wait!” said Shannon, backtracking. “Won’t everyone think it’s a little weird and suspicious that there will be no alcohol? I mean, this is you we’re talking about, Kate. You always drink!”

“Well…” Katy thought. “I suppose I should announce it to everyone at the party then. It’ll be twelve weeks so I’ll be past the first trimester, which is when most people start telling everyone… It just seems like the right time.”

Shannon nodded. “Good idea. So you’re due like… middle of August?”

“I guess so,” Katy thought about it for a moment, then giggled. “I reckon this baby was conceived on my birthday.”

“Katy! Too much information!” Shannon scrunched up her nose in disgust. “But how do you know that, anyway?”

“Coz that was the only time we had sex around that time, we didn’t do it for more than a week before and after my birthday. We went out in Birmingham for my birthday, it was just lucky he was in England at the time.” Katy smiled nostalgically, remembering the wonderful night they’d had celebrating her twenty seventh birthday.

Katy was brought out of her daydream by her phone buzzing, indicating she had a text.

Tamra: We’re here, car is right out the front. There’s no paps.

“Tamra’s here, let’s go!” said Katy, picking up her bag and grabbing Shannon’s hand, pulling her out the room.

“I know you’re excited to leave Katy, but no need to manhandle me!” laughed Shannon, following her best friend through the hallways of the hospital and out to the front. True to Tamra’s word, there were no paparazzi waiting for them, and they hopped in the back of the black car quickly, joining Tamra and Bradford.

“Everything okay now, Katy?” asked Bradford, concerned. He was the only other person in Katy’s team other than Tamra who knew about the pregnancy.

“Everything’s great!” smiled Katy, resting her head against the headrest and letting her body melt into the comfortable and luxurious leather seat. “I can’t wait to get home.”
