22nd January, 2012

Katy stumbled off stage in the Philippines after performing California Girls for the final time on the California Dreams Tour. She was greeted with numerous congratulations and pats on the back from the crew surrounding her, but all she wanted to do was get back to her dressing room and collapse.

“I’m exhausted!” she moaned as she burst through the door, startling Shannon who was sitting on the couch. Shannon had taken a break from filming Raising Hope in order to accompany Katy on the final leg of her tour. “All this dancing cannot be good for the baby!”

Shannon rolled her eyes in amusement. “I hardly think two shows of your mediocre dancing will put much of a strain on the baby, Katheryn,” she replied dryly, standing up to help Katy undress.

“Hey!” Katy pouted. “My dancing isn’t mediocre!” She paused for a second, raising an eyebrow at Shannon before they burst into laughter simultaneously. They both knew dancing was not Katy’s strong point.

Katy finished getting changed for her meet and greet with fans, which unfortunately was scheduled for after the show this time, quickly having a drink of water and touching up her makeup before exiting the room and walking down the hallway to the meet and greet room.

As she entered the room, she plastered a massive smile on her face, waving enthusiastically at the excited fans waiting patiently to meet her.

“Hi guys!” she said, but before she could start to talk to anyone individually, Katy began to feel extremely nauseous and felt too warm and claustrophobic. Without warning, she threw up on the floor in front of her. Then the room spun and as Katy caught sight of a dozen hands reaching towards her, everything went black.

Shannon tapped her foot on the ground impatiently as she sat next to Katy’s hospital bed. Katy had passed out during her meet and greet and had been rushed to the hospital. It had been ten hours since she had been admitted to the hospital and Katy still hadn’t woken up.

Shannon was bored, but wasn’t going to leave Katy’s side until she woke up. Tamra and the rest of Katy’s team were doing damage control, trying to make sure the press didn’t get word of the sudden incident, and all the fans present in the meet and greet had been asked to keep it quiet for Katy’s privacy.

As Shannon stared down at her phone, looking for something to occupy her time, she heard a quiet rustling noise. Looking up, she watched as Katy turned her head to face Shannon, opening her eyes sleepily.

“Shan?” she croaked. “Where am I?”

“Oh thank God you’re awake!” Shannon cried. “You’re in the hospital babe, you passed out during your meet and greet last night! It was kinda scary…”

Katy struggled to sit up. “Is everything okay? Is the baby okay?!” she suddenly panicked, remembering the life growing in her stomach.

“The doctors just said that the reason you fainted is probably because you’re dehydrated, exhausted and stressed,” replied Shannon.

“When can I go home?” Katy asked, groaning at the inconvenience she had caused for herself and everyone else.

Shannon stood up. “I’ll go get a doctor and find out, I’ll be back in a minute.”

Katy fell back on the pillows behind her, her head spinning slightly. She felt a mild stinging sensation in her left hand and looked down, noticing for the first time that there was a needle going into her hand, supplying fluid to her body to combat the dehydration.

Katy’s head snapped back up as she heard her phone ringing. She felt around on the bed beside her, finding her phone just as it was about to ring out.

Breathlessly, she answered, “Hello?”

“Katy, you’re awake!” Tamra’s voice echoed through the speaker.

“Yeah I woke up a few minutes ago, Shannon’s just gone to get the doctor.”

“Okay, well can you let me know as soon as the doctor says when you can go home? I need to book the flight to get you back home, it’s probably best if you get home as soon as possible then you can rest as much as you can in your own bed.”

Katy agreed. “Oh, Tam… The press doesn’t know anything about this, do they?”

“I don’t think so…” replied Tamra hesitantly. “We’ve been running interference and making sure it doesn’t get out, but you never know, Kate. We won’t know unless we see it pop up somewhere on the internet probably.”

Katy sighed. “Yeah, I know. I hope no one’s got word of this though, I’m not keen to address any rumours at the moment! I just want to go home…”

“I know, Kate,” soothed Tamra. “As soon as you’re allowed to, we’ll get you straight home. Call me as soon as you know, okay?”

“Okay, thanks Tam.”

Katy hung up the phone just as the doctor entered the room, Shannon trailing behind him. “Good to see you awake, Katy!” said the doctor cheerfully, approaching the bed.

Katy just smiled weakly. “When can I go home?”

The doctor laughed. “Well your friend here has informed me that you will have the best care possible when you leave, so I don’t see why we need to keep you for too long. I say you can go as soon as the bag of fluids we are giving you is finished. It looks like there’s only an hour or so left.”

“Thank God,” sighed Katy in relief. “Is my baby okay?”

“Your baby?” the doctor frowned slightly.

“Yes… You didn’t know I was pregnant?” asked Katy, her eyes widening slightly.

“Umm we must have missed that… Excuse me for a moment,” said the doctor, rushing out the room looking worried.

Katy began to panic. “Oh no, oh no, oh no…” she repeated, twisting her hands nervously. Then she rounded on Shannon. “Why didn’t you tell anyone?!”

Shannon looked guilty, but replied defensively, “No one asked!”

Katy snorted. “You should tell them anyway!” she cried. “Jesus, Shannon…”

A tear rolled down Katy’s face as she realised for the first time just how much she already loved this baby. “I won’t let anything happen to you, kiddo,” she whispered, rubbing small circles on her still flat stomach.
