7th January, 2012

Tamra arrived back at Katy’s place in record time, letting herself into the house like she usually did and making her way upstairs to find Katy.

“Kate? Where are you?” she called.

“In the bathroom!” replied Katy, her voice sounding weak. Tamra sighed and raced towards the bathroom, finding Katy on the floor.

“Did you get sick again?”

Katy nodded weakly, attempting to sit up without making her head spin. “Where did you go?” she asked.

Tamra hesitated before replying, now second guessing her decision. “Katy babe, I went to the pharmacy down the road. I got something for you, I really think you should try it just in case.”

“What is it?” Katy questioned, confused by Tamra’s tone of voice and choice of words.

Wordlessly, Tamra held the box out to Katy, who took it and looked down. She shrieked in horror as she read the label on the box. “No! Tam, there is no way!”

“Kate, are you sure? I think it’s best just to take it, that way you know for certain,” Tamra pleaded.

Katy shook her head vehemently. “I’m not pregnant!” she denied. “I don’t need to take a pregnancy test!”

“Well it’s up to you, but Kate, this isn’t normal. You don’t just get sick for no reason, especially when you’ve hardly eaten anything that could actually make you sick recently.”

Katy was silent, then stalked past Tamra into her bedroom to get dressed, fuming at her personal assistant’s accusations.

“Katy, I’m leaving if you’re not going to talk to me, okay? Call me if you need me,” said Tamra as she left the room.

“Okay,” Katy replied shortly, not coming out of her walk-in wardrobe to say goodbye.

Once Tamra had left, Katy emerged, walking hesitantly to the adjoining bathroom. She picked up the box, holding it gingerly between her fingertips as if it could explode at any moment. Pausing momentarily, she dropped one hand down to her stomach, lifting her top up slightly to get a better look at it in the mirror.

“I can’t be…” Katy whispered to herself, a tear running down her cheek as she considered the implications of a pregnancy. Instead of opening the box, she reached into the cabinet under the sink and pulled out her current sheet of birth control pills. Examining the packet carefully, she noticed that the foil edge on one side was lifting up slightly, and if she pulled it up more, she could see that the glue was badly and hastily applied.

“BASTARD!” she suddenly screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing the pill packet at the wall in rage. “HOW COULD HE?!”

Filled with anger, Katy ripped open the box of the pregnancy test, scanning the instructions quickly before peeing on the small stick. As she placed the test onto the bathroom counter, preparing herself for five minutes of agonising waiting, she decided she needed to send a few messages.

Quickly, she grabbed her phone and sent a group message to Tamra, Shannon and Angela.

Katy: Can you girls come over right now please? I think I’m going to need your support in a few mins…

Within the next two minutes, she received affirmative responses from all three women, confirming they would be there in the next fifteen minutes. Katy decided to wait until they arrived before she checked the results of the test.

Rushing downstairs, she paced frantically up and down the entrance hallway of her house until the doorbell rang. Surprisingly, all three arrived at exactly the same time, and Katy opened the door to find them standing at her front door together.

She received hugs as Shannon, Angela and Tamra filed into the house, with Tamra giving her a knowing but sympathetic look, understanding why she had been called back so soon.

“What’s up, babe?” asked Shannon. “It’s good to see you out of bed, by the way.” Angela nodded in agreement.

“Can you come up to my room with me? All of you? I think I have some news…” Katy trailed off, looking at the floor nervously.

They followed her upstairs, Shannon and Angela exchanging confused glances. “You think you have news? What are you talking about Katheryn?” asked Angela.

Katy quickly disappeared into the bathroom, grabbing the test and hiding it behind her back. “Just sit with me and hold me for a minute, okay? I have a feeling I’m going to need you girls.”

All four of the women piled onto Katy’s bed, with Katy surrounded by her best friends and older sister, who she also considered one of her best friends. Tamra sat cross legged in front of Katy, holding her free hand reassuringly, while Angela cuddled into Katy’s side and Shannon wrapped her arms around Katy from behind, resting her chin on her shoulder.

They all heard Katy take a deep, trembling breath as she pulled something from behind her back and looked at it quickly.

“No…” whispered Katy, tears immediately filling her eyes as she handed the test to Tamra.

Tamra kneeled in front of Katy, pulling Katy’s fragile, shaking body into her strong arms as she held up the test for Angela and Shannon to see. They immediately understood what was happening and grabbed Katy from all directions, providing her with the love and support she so desperately craved right now as she sobbed into Tamra’s shoulder.
