the flames
make her cheeks glow orange
and her eyes grow wide
she has little eyes
a little mouth
little elbows
and little fingernails
she barely knows
how to hold herself up
how to move
how to look around at the world
but she knows
it is a special day
everyone
is talking to her
is showing her bright and wonderful things
she barely knows
how to talk
or walk
or eat her own food
but she knows
that the little flames
are meant for her
the round and floating colours
the swirling and swooping paper
the pointy hat on her head
are all meant for her
and she dreams
of all tomorrow's parties
