Flaca POV
The waiting room feels too quiet, my hand tightly wrapped around Tony's as we sit side by side. Antonia is with Monse and Cesar, giving us some peace for this final checkup, but my heart is pounding. "I swear, our little girl is more stubborn than Antonia," I whisper, half-smiling but mostly exhausted.
Tony squeezes my hand and rubs my back gently. "I know, baby. You've barely been able to sleep these past few nights. She's got you all twisted up in knots."
The door opens and Dr. Maldonado steps out, her face calm but serious. "Alright, Flaca, Tony — let's take a look."
Inside the exam room, I lie back as the doctor checks the baby's position and monitors her heart rate. Tony is close, his fingers brushing my forehead, grounding me. After a few minutes, Dr. Maldonado pulls back and looks at us.
"She's still high and posterior," the doctor says carefully. "Her stubbornness is making labor slow to start on its own. Given how far along you are and how much discomfort you're in, I recommend we induce today."
My breath catches. "Induce?" I ask, voice small.
Tony leans in close, whispering, "Whatever it takes, mi amor. We're ready."
Dr. Maldonado smiles kindly. "We'll keep you comfortable and monitor everything closely. This is to keep both you and the baby safe."
Tears slip from my eyes, but Tony wipes them gently away. "Our baby's been waiting for the right moment. Looks like that moment's now."
I nod, feeling nervous and relieved all at once. Together, we'll meet our stubborn little girl soon.
Flaca POV
The ultrasound room is dim and cool, the screen glowing softly in front of us. Tony sits close, his hand warm around mine, and I'm trying to calm my fluttering nerves.
Dr. Maldonado moves the wand gently over my belly, and the grainy black-and-white shapes start to form—the familiar tiny face, the little hands curled up, the stubborn little feet refusing to shift.
"There she is," Tony breathes, smiling as the baby wiggles just enough to remind us she's still holding her own position.
I laugh quietly, "She's definitely taking after me. Always doing things her way."
The doctor studies the screen closely. "Baby's still posterior and not quite engaged yet. That's why labor hasn't started. She's comfortable where she is, but you're uncomfortable too, Flaca."
I nod, swallowing the tight lump in my throat.
Tony looks at me, his eyes soft. "We've waited as long as we can. Time to bring her out."
Dr. Maldonado turns to us with a calm but firm smile. "I recommend we induce labor today. It's the safest option given how stubborn she is being."
My heart pounds, the ultrasound screen now showing the little life we're about to meet. "Alright," I say, "Let's do it."
Tony leans over and kisses my forehead. "Our stubborn girl's ready to meet us.
