How Trina Got In

About a month later, I was sitting at the Asphalt Cafe for lunch with Andre, Jade, Cat, and Beck. I was sitting next to Beck. We were quietly eating. I wasn't really hungry, so I was just poking my food.

"You know there's this germ called pykersilium that you can get from a spider crawling in your mouth while you're asleep. Like, your uvula wells up really big so you can't breathe and they have to cut a hole right here," Jade pointed to a spot on her throat, "To drain the pus from your throat."

"I did not know that," I pushed my food even further away from me, "Thanks for enlightening me."

"I'll just eat this pudding cup later," Andre put down the plastic cup of pudding he was eating.

"So does anyone want some candy?" Cat asked.

I shook my head, "I've got some."

"Sure," everybody else agreed.

Cat pulled a gumdrop out of her bra and handed it to Jade, "Gumdrop for you," she handed one to Andre, "Gumdrop for you," she reached down to get one for Beck.

"You can stop," I smiled and pulled a gumdrop out of my bra for Beck, "Gumdrop for you."

Confused, they smiled at us. This was normal.

Just then, Trina danced by yelling something about "Skid da lee do, skid a lee bop." I didn't know what that meant so I shrugged it off. Maybe it was another language.

"Wow," Beck paused, "She is just awful."

"Worst thing I've ever heard," Jade agreed.

"Why? What language was she speaking?" I asked. I didn't recognize it.

Beck sighed, "She was trying to sing. In English."

My eyes widened, "Then she was really bad."

"I have a question," Cat piped up.

"What?" Andre asked.

"Every kid has to audition to get into Hollywood Arts, right?" Cat asked. We all nodded, answering her question. She continued, "And Trina has no talent, right?" We all said 'no' in some way, shape, or form.

"Then how did she pass her audition and get to go to school here?" I asked, realizing that Trina had to audition too.

"You haven't heard the story?" Jade asked.

I shook my head. Cat turned to look at the goth, "No, but I love stories!"

"I'll tell it," Andre offered to tell the story. I wanted to hear the story! He took a sip out of his cup then started, "Okay, it was about four years ago. Back then, Trina did have talent. Oh yes, she could sing like an angel. And she was on that stage, singing like an angel..." he continued telling the story. Apparently, she got in but as soon as she finished her audition, Sin-Jin dropped a light on her throat and she couldn't sing anymore. But she had already gotten in. Her throat never healed from the damage.

"Really?" Cat asked after he was done.

"That sounds like something Sin-Jin would do," I nodded, thinking about his failed game show and every other time he'd spoken.

"That light hit Trina so hard it knocked all the talent right out of her," Andre continued.

Jade spoke up, "Okay, that is not how Trina got into Hollywood Arts."

"That's the story I always heard," Andre defended his story. It was pretty believable.

"Well it's wrong," Beck said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. I held his hand and leaned on him.
