I hated being Lucia, pretending to comfort Tatiana about losing her husband was torture when really I needed answers from Andrés myself.
He might've told me about his past, but he'd forgotten to mention about his upcoming untimely death.
"I want you to come and meet Andrés and his brother, Sergio." Finally a name to the mysterious brother that wants me for my abilities. For the first time since the news my lover was dying, I get excited. I was finally going to meet Andrés as Lucia.
I hadn't spoken to Andrés since finding out, I didn't know what to say to him, nor did I want him to think I was falling for him already.
"Only if you think it will help?" I question but I'm dying to scream yes.
"Yes," She confirms and my heart flutters with joy to know the plan is in motion. "You need to meet him to understand my problems."
"And Sergio?" It felt strange saying the brother's name for the first time, knowing he had big plans for me.
"He'll give you an insight as to what Andrés is like without me around." It was as if Tatiana was making my job easier to speak with Sergio in private without her being suspicious, or to introduce myself to Andrés and her not worry because she thinks my friendship would never override my feelings for her husband. Andrés and I had her wrapped round our fingers and it felt fantastic knowing we had her exactly where we wanted.
For a criminal, she didn't have the brains I would expect, in fact she seemed pretty dopey. But for a 22 year old girl who wants to save her marriage, her actions seemed rational.
She takes my hand and she hurries towards her car, I get into her new enough car and she smiles at me, glad I was with her.
The whole care journey she spoke about what Andrés is like as a person, and even admitted herself that he loves himself a bit too much. I compress my laughter knowing it was the truth but it was something I liked about him. She then speaks about Sergio, and says he's a quiet gentleman and doesn't have much to do with him, but he says he's nice enough.
I was intrigued to see where exactly it was she was taking me. In the time I'd known Andrés he'd never mentioned where he lived, so when Tatiana pulls up in front of an old monastery I'm taken aback.
"Welcome to my home!" She boasts. "Well, half of it. The monks still live on one half of it whilst we live on the other, they're good neighbours to have really!"
"So you got married here?" I question a little surprised and see her head bounce up and down frantically. When she said a small wedding I didn't realise it was literally in her garden.
Suddenly I feel nervous, I now knew the truth about Andrés and I'd been ignoring his calls. Not only that, but I was anxious to meet Sergio, especially when Andrés said he knew a lot about me the moment my name was revealed.
She links her arm with mine very forcefully, almost to show her husband and brother in-law that she did actually have friends, but we all know she didn't. We walk towards the courtyard where I see the back of two men's heads, one clearly Andrés', the memory of twisting my fragile fingers beneath his hair smacks me in the face which makes me grin. The other has jet black hair that is smoothly pushed to the back. They're chatting with a bottle of red already open whilst they soak in the last couple of hours of the sun.
"Hello darling!" She calls cheerfully, almost a little too excitedly. "I've brought a guest for you to meet."
Both men stand up in sync, they face me and I see Andrés nod at Sergio as if to say 'This is her'. He then looks at me and half smiles, Sergio is expressionless.
"Ah! It's so lovely to finally meet my wife's friend that she's been talking about! Lucia, yes?" Andrés asks just before he kisses my cheek.
"Uh yes," I pretend to be nervous.
"Well I am Andrés her wonderful husband," He smirks and licks his lips. Strangely I found him more full of himself now as I played Lucia then I ever did as Aurora, maybe Andrés was acting too, though surely Tatiana would see right through this? "And this is my brother, Sergio."
Sergio gives a brief smile and pecks me on cheek, his beard brushes my face which itches slightly and when he leans out he pokes at the middle of his glasses as if they had slid down his angled nose. "It's lovely to meet you." He mumbles softly, but his voice gives me comfort which I smile genuinely at.
"Thank you for having me, it's so kind of you all."
"No, you've been a true friend to me." Tatiana puts her hand on my shoulder and then eyes Andrés maliciously.
I could feel the tension between them, as if guns were drawn. If Tatiana thinks this is the way to win back her husband then she was going the wrong way about it.
Sergio can feel the wave of tension swallowing us too and says: "Would you like a drink, Lucia?"
"Why not?" I sigh happily taking a seat between the brothers. "I do love a glass of wine." I admit and in the corner of my eye I can see Andrés smirking and sneakily puts his hand on my knee under the table.
In protest I shake it off and see his cheeky smile turn into a deathly stare, as if I had crossed a line and I should've obeyed.
