"Gather round this table please." Sergio asks when we all enter the classroom. "Today I'm going to teach you about the anatomy. First, I need a volunteer to lie down." Rio's hand shoots up into the air like a giddy child. "Excellent. Rio, please take off your shirt." The Professor asks which makes Tokyo wolf whistle and I giggle.
"Do you workout Rio, huh?" Denver punches Rio's hard stomach that was lined with abs, and both boys laugh playfully.
Rio hops up onto the table and lies down on it, the Professor gets two marker pens, one purple, the other red and tells us to settle down. "Pay attention." He orders and we all hover over Rio's body.
I stand next to Andrés and see him smirking at me: "Don't distract me." I whisper to him with a smile plastered across my face.
The Professor makes his first pen line on Rio, from the bottom of his stomach upwards and says: "Inferior vein." The pen goes to the left of his body. "The right kidney, and the left." Is also drawn on. Rio looks mainly at Tokyo, but now and again does look at what is being doodled on his body.
"Mesenteric lungs, right and left." He continues to draw in one line, as if it was art to him. "Going from the heart, you have veins." Rio flashes another smile to Tokyo which makes my eyes roll. "Subclavian, right and left." The drawing is now on Rio's chest and spreading out towards his shoulders.
The Professor spouts more words that I have never heard before as he marks Rio's arms and neck. The pace Sergio goes makes things harder to learn, I've always hated biology so this was a difficult lesson for me.
"The red lines are major arteries." The Professor starts to draw on Rio in red, but is soon interrupted by Denver.
"Wait, wait, wait..." He splutters out like a machine gun spitting out bullets. "What is this? You're going to teach us how to be medics? With some markers?" I can hear his frustration, maybe he hates biology too. But I can see why Sergio is teaching this to us, if we get shot or injured, we can't just call for an ambulance, we have to deal with it ourselves.
"This is fucking suicide!" Denver growls angrily. He has a point though, looking around the room, I don't think I'd let anyone operate on me. But if I'm shot, I don't have a choice and they will be my last chance to survive so I just have to learn to trust them.
"Denver, trust us." I say to him soothingly and place my hand on his arm.
"No Vienna," he shakes my hand away in frustration. "it's one thing to be stuck in that rat trap, dying is something else!"
"Denver." Andrés calmly calls, knowing that Denver may just end up fighting me over it. "He's just teaching you how to remove a bullet, this isn't brain surgery."
"I'd rather be a cripple and free, then be stuck in jail and healthy." Tokyo says, which I nod to in agreement.
"No one leaves!" Sergio grunts. "If anyone is identified we're all screwed. You want to back out?" He looks at Denver only. "This is the time to, and you will stay here until the heist is over." Suddenly Denver's annoyance vanishes. Maybe that's how we have to get through to him, by being blunt and simple.
Rio makes an immature joke about Helsinki, but how Helsinki replies makes us all burst into laughter. I laugh so hard I have to lean on Andrés for support.
"Please!" Sergio says to silence us again. "Someone else?"
I smile and go to raise my hand to volunteer as the next blank canvas, but Andrés snatches my hand in his, and shakes his head slowly at me. During this time, Nairobi strips off revealing her leopard print bra. "Oh Nairobi, you have to let me borrow this - it's fabulous!" I exclaim admiring the print.
