"Vienna!" Nairobi shouts as I grab the door handle of Monica's office. "Berlin has asked to speak with us." No... Rio hasn't had the time to tell Andrés how essential it is I speak with him.
I breathe heavily, knowing I'm seconds away from grabbing that pregnancy test. "Err hello? Earth to Vienna? Let's go!" She shouts, and in fury I release the handle angrily. "Rio said you threw up again, are you okay?"
I told her no more secrets. "Not really, the Professor said there's some medication in Monica's office that might help." But a white lie isn't a secret if I tell her a half truth.
"We'll grab it once Berlin is done with his little speech." She smiles, and through panic, I smile back.
We're the last to arrive and we sit at the table together as Andrés prepares himself for what he's about to say. Upon my arrival, Andrés hasn't even acknowledged me, and that's when I know something is terribly wrong.
"My friends, after some deep reflection, I want to apologise for not being completely honest with you. The inspector was right, I have a degenerative disease - a real motherfucker." He pauses, but the room is silent as we listen. "And my days are numbered, but it's not my intention to make you sad, or for you to feel pity. In the end, we're talking about a disease that is suffered by 1 out of 100,000 people." He scoffs a laugh. "And that makes me special, what I want is for us to celebrate." He pours us all a shot of Tequilla.
He hands them out then raises his glass first, the rest of us follow his action. "We're all going to die, and I'll drink to that, because right now we're alive and because the plan is going really well!" He chuckles. "To life... and to the plan!" He purrs and together we all clink our glasses. Everyone takes their shot, except me. The idea of being pregnant is the only thing I can think of right now, and if I am, I shouldn't be drinking.
For the first time, Andrés looks at me with a confused expression. He's probably offended I've not drunk to his toast, and therefore thinks I'm disrespectful. I get up and leave without saying another word and head back to Monica's office.
When I enter, the room is quiet and Oslo sits on the sofa gazing out of the window, the girls huddle together like penguins keeping warm, then I spot Ariadna. She looks up to me, and it's clear she's scared of me. I don't dare take my eyes off of her until I reach the desk, but the tension is too much for her so she looks away. I open Monica's draws clumsily, and find it almost immediately. "Vienna?" Oslo questions me.
"Just grabbing some medication." I reply quietly, but secretly I'm thrilled to have found the test. I smile and stuff it into my pocket before leaving Oslo with the girls again.
I run to the closest toilet there is and wee on the stick. The two minutes go slowly, and my legs won't stop shaking knowing this could ruin me and Andrés. Thoughts spin around in my head, how could I ever tell him that I'm pregnant when that was the last thing a dying man would want?
I look down at the test in my hands and gasp in relief. "Thank God." I mutter and smile seeing a negative sign appear. Although still feeling nauseous, I'm delighted to know a baby isn't causing this illness.
I leave the toilet to see Nairobi waiting outside. "Hey! I saw you run in here so I thought I'd wait for you, Moscow has dug to the dirt so I'm going to go check it out if you want to come? Thought I'd take a break from giving orders at the printing pressers, you know!"
"I'd love to come see some dirt with you Nairobi." I say sarcastically and together we laugh.
"You're looking better already by the way!" She says happily and I smile. It's relief, the best kind of medicine.
