Maddie
"Last day of senior year, huh?" my mom attempts to make conversation with me as she cooks breakfast.
"Yup," I reply coldly. That was unnecessarily rude, I think.
My mother and I don't have the best mother-daughter relationship. She tries and I respect that, but the two of us have never gotten along well.
"You excited?" she sets a plate of scrambled eggs in front of me. I stare down at the eggs then look up at her.
The bright glow from the white kitchen around her makes her silhouette look so small and curvaceous.
Looks as if the kitchen is completely spotless. Typical for her behavior, to make sure the kitchen is clean. She looks like a doll, almost not real. A small smile rests on her face. Her light blonde hair flows down her shoulders. And her blue eyes stick out the most.
My mom and I look almost nothing alike. She's blonde hair, blue eyes and I'm brown hair, grey eyes. My sister, Audrey, had blonde hair as well. The two of them were very similar in looks while my dad and I were the twins. Too bad he's a complete asshole and I cannot believe I'm related to him. But you can't stop DNA, I guess.
"Fuck no," I finally respond and shake my head.
She snaps her finger at me, "language!"
I roll my eyes, "stop with the act mom. You didn't respond like this back in Pittsburgh," I call out.
"Things were... different in Pittsburgh, but now we're here. I'm trying to change for the better," she puts her hand on her hip.
I take a bite of the eggs, "whatever," I mumble with a mouth full of food. "Sorry. I get what you're trying to do," I apologize.
She smiles briefly, "thank you Madison. I do hope you understand my change in attitude is for you and your father."
I nod, "I do understand," then take another bite. She hums in response.
I attempt to avoid most conversations with my family. After moving to LA, I drifted from my family more than ever. My mom forced the move on us to be closer as a family. That didn't work out exactly as planned. So, I spend most of my time outside of the house or in my room, locked away. I try to be kind to my mom since she's put up with my bullshit for so long but it's difficult with the situation she's put the two of us in.
"I'm gonna head out," I stand from my chair and grab my backpack from the seat beside me. I set my dirty plate in the sink beside her.
"Alright, have a good day!" she exclaims, she sounds more excited than I am.
I force out a smile, "I will, and I'll just come home after school. I have things to do before graduation tomorrow." I grab my car keys from the counter.
"Sounds good," she smiles.
I walk out of the kitchen and to the front door then slip my shoes on. I look to my left and see my dad spread out on the couch. The TV playing and at 8 am, a beer in his hand. I scoff, roll my eyes, and open the front door.
I fucking hate him, is all I can think about as I walk to my car parked in the driveway. I hop in the front seat and try to push the intrusive thoughts out of my head with music. I shuffle BROCKHAMPTON on Spotify, recently their music has been a good release of any negative emotions.
