The next morning, I cleaned myself well. I was freaking out about last night with Evangelines dad. He met me wearing glitter and no shirt. It most likely wasn't a good impression.
"Hey!" Evangeline peeked her head through the door. I turned around quickly and smiled. She sat on my unmade bed.
"Hey."
"I had so much fun last night. Honestly some part of me felt tired but I just couldn't stop jumping-"
"Evie-" I interrupted her.
"Yeah?"
"Yesterday after I took you to your room, I ran into your dad-"
"WHAT?" She stood up from the bed.
"It wasn't good."
"Bullocks."
"What does that mean? Like 'bullshit?"
"What in the bloody hell am I supposed to do now? When he wasn't here, I wasn't under complete supervision! He's gonna want to hang out with me the entire week. I'll never get anything done."
"Anything? Evie it's a week. How bad can it be?"
"Bad, Beckett!"
"Look, I have a meeting with Doctor Raja. I gotta be there in ten minutes but we'll hang out later."
"Beckett, please don't leave me alone with him! You have no idea what it's like to have a father who never comes to see you!"
"You're right I don't. My father isn't in my life either way." I walked out of the room.
"OH BECKETT! I'M SORRY!" She shouted in the hallway as I walked away.
It was true. My dad wasn't in my life. Hasn't been for almost five years or so. He didn't die or abandon me. We still text every now and then and call like once every month. He got remarried and had twins. Basically another family. Which is okay, I guess. He's happy with them. It's okay if we couldn't do our job to impress him. At least I still have my mom.
This meeting was different. I knew right away once I walked into the door and saw my mom sitting next to my dad. Along with my two twin siblings, Charlie and Declan. My dad and brothers get up right away and hug me tightly. I know this is going to sound horrible but why is he here? Especially because Evangeline mentioned him. His eyes were watery. My brothers are both five. They barely knew what was happening. My dad still held me. I was afraid they were going to tell me I was going to die.
"My son, you look like shit." My dad laughed and hugged me again. I chuckled awkwardly and looked at my mom, only to see her smiling.
"Dad? What's going on?"
"Well Beckett, from your last cat scan your tumor was larger but it's gotten to a considerably smaller size. Thing is, you'll need surgery on your upper arm near your shoulder. It can be removed. We just have to go over everything that will happen." Smiled Doctor Raja.
I stopped listening after that. I was getting my first ever surgery. My skin grew with goosebumps. My nerves were shot. As you can tell, I wasn't feeling the best.
Once the meeting was finished, I saw Evangeline with her dad at the end of the hallway. I quickly entered my room so she wouldn't see me. I knew how she was. She could be kind of annoying when she wanted to be. I just received news and I don't know how to take it. Charlie and Declan took over my bed and fell asleep. My mom, dad and I talked for a while.
"So who's Evangeline?" Asked my dad.
"Mom, you told him?" I was overcome with embarrassment. My mom most likely over exaggerated when she told him.
"Are you two dating?"
"Dad!" I covered my face with my left hand with my fingers spread out. I was also slouching on the chair I had in my room while my mom sat on the corner of the bed and my dad sat on the table next to me.
"Well who is she?"
"She's a friend that I met."
"Where is she from? Anywhere near?"
"London." I mumbled.
"London? As in London, England?"
"Yeah?"
"She's very sweet, Wyatt. I actually like her. She seems free-spirited."
"She is."
"Do you like her?" Asked my dad.
"I don't know. Maybe?"
"Let's talk about that maybe."
"Well she got the worst news of her life. Her cancer type is unknown and she told me by the time they find out what she has, she'll be long gone. They've tried almost every drug trial their is. The chemo sessions and drug trials they were experimenting with failed."
"If they failed, she's going to-"
"Die. I know." I finished my dads sentence.
"Where is she now?" Asked my mom.
"Her dad's here. I think she's had a long talk with him about it. She knew he knew about it but they wanted to talk in person. That's why I say I don't know about liking her. I don't want to fall for someone who's actually going to die in the end. I think seeing that will break me." I leaned my arm on the table and let my head rest on my hand.
My dad looked at my mom and they both had this look on their face. They both stood up and told me to stand up. So I did. They both hugged me. Tighter than before. When I was eleven, we had this thing called "family sandwich." It was when one of us was sad and we needed a hug. I needed it. I hadn't put too much thought into it but Evangeline really was going to die. The girl I was falling for was going to die. And I'll watch along the way as I help her complete that bucket list. I don't think I will make it to the end. Evangeline is amazing. She doesn't deserve it.
