By the time lunch is here, I was starving, I run to my locker putting everything away and slipping a three dollar bill in my pocket, that should be enough for a slice of pizza. I keep my phone in my pocket, on do not disturb, and head towards the cafeteria.
When I have walked what felt like half a mile around trying to remember where the entrance is, I finally see a cheery Avani sitting with a not so cheery Charli. When I walk up to them, they don't notice my presence as they switch style advice.
"Oh, hey, Sav!" Charli greets a bit happier than she was a minute ago.
"Hi-" I can't even finish my sentence before The brown-haired, makeup plastered, girl, sparks up a new topic just as Josh, Anthony, Chase, and Dixie walk up.
"Okay, so next week, as you know, is fall break and..." she pulls out about eleven envelopes from the back pocket of her dark blue mom jeans. "You and everyone else," she pointed towards everybody at the round table, "are invited to my friends giving the day before actual thanksgiving!" She squeals, clearly excited for the extravagant event.
I had never really been invited to friends giving before so there was no way I couldn't take her up on the offer. "I'm down,"
They agree to come as I get up to go get grab lunch and possibly a drink if I can. I walk out of the cafeteria and over to one of the two vending machines down the hall. As I push in the slim dollar bill, I start thinking about how Josh was acting so normal, while I hear making our friendship even more awkward.
My thoughts disappear as soon as I hear the loud thud of my red Gatorade falling to the bottom and I reach down to grab it. I had about two dollars left, and since school lunch is pretty cheap, I should be able to still get my slice of pizza.
When I head back into the cafeteria, waiting in line, I check my phone to see that I had seven missed messages from both Hailey and Austin.
Hailey: only a week!!!!!<3
Austin: yesssss
Austin: that's only like what
Austin: 7 days????
Hailey: yes Austin, you finally learned kinder math
Hailey: *eye-rolling emoji*
Austin: Savvvvvvv come share our excitement!
Me: I'm at school.
Austin: ok? And?
Me: and I'll get my phone taken away if I'm on it meaning that I wouldn't get it back until tomorrow.
Me: so if you want me to text you later, that's possible if you would stop texting me!
Me: Thanks! Kisses, Sav<3
I laugh at my own stupidity as I step closer to the trays and where you actually get your food.
"Miss, what would you like?" The elderly lunch lady asks me and doing hand motions to show me my options, including pizza.
"Um, pizza please?" She grabs the slice, nearly throwing it past my styrofoam tray. They say they throw them away I don't believe that I've heard they wash them and re-use them and that's why they collect them after lunch.
Usually, when I do get school lunch, I just throw my tray away with the rest of my trash.
When I pay for my single slice of pizza I cut it really close to not having enough, I had a dollar and ninety-eight cents when a single slice of pizza costs a dollar and eighty-five cents. I sigh thankfully and walk back over to the table to see everyone sitting down.
Avani has already given me my "invite" so I assumed she gave everyone else theirs too. "Who is the last one for, I know one is for Addison but,"
"Oh it's for her "friend"" she does finger air quotes around the word friend "Bryce." She smirks while explaining to me.
I briefly not with a "that doesn't sound too bad" look on my face. I sit next to Josh and Charli, as usual, and talk to Charli. She mostly asks me about hanging out with her and Dixie after school, and I gladly agree, and about how she wants to teach me Tik Tok dances and also how she wants to record a dance duet with me to upload as an IGTV on Instagram. She asks me about my absolute favorite stores due to the fact that we have basically the same style, meaning we can give each other advice on stuff at the mall.
Throughout lunch, it was all small talk, occasional conversations with the whole group and we even played card games with a deck Chase had supposedly stolen from his art class.
I decide that tomorrow after school I will take all of my old clothes to the local "my best friend's closet" and hopefully have them take all of them mostly so that I can get some money off of it.
I'm exhilarated for practice later just so it can wear me out and I can shower then sleep. I usually get fast food after practice saying we don't have many family dinners anymore, and if we do they only consist of the forcing of one another or just me and my mom or dad.
I'm thankful that the day flew by and I was currently heading to my last class and since it was Tuesday, meaning I had biology as my last class, making it easy for Josh to stick around. When I get there, I sit in my usual seat as Josh comes in nearly three minutes late.
He quickly apologizes to the teacher and scurries over towards the seat next to me with a cautious grin on his face. "You better not leave me at the mall Friday to go with Charli alone." He warns.
"Then stick with us." I explain to him and he surprisingly agrees with a simple "sure". Sure, it's so bland, almost no meaning in it. I wonder what it would be like to have Josh constructively criticize you on your clothes.
I might be trying on clothes for Josh.
