The revelation that the change was forever, only worsened my flusteration towards him. I averted my eyes, the fluttering in my stomach growing into large swarms. I tucked my hands into my jacket pockets to prevent them from fidgeting out in the open, after letting go of the empty juice carton onto the counter.
I could feel Cameron's burning gaze on me, eliciting the increase of the warmness of my cheeks. I tipped my head forward slightly to prevent my face from further exposure. My attempts were all eventually deemed as futile especially when Olivia spoke up.
"Hey, Cameron. I think Heather here has something for you." She said, nudging me with her shoulder once again. She lowered her voice so that only I could hear her. "Are you okay?"
"I don't know." I murmured back an honest answer. I was lost in a maze, unsure where to go and what I was feeling. Olivia clamped her hand around my shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
"Talk to me if you need anything." She said, walking towards Charlie and Sophia. That was when I realised that the presence of Cameron Tan was no longer by Charlie and Sophia's side. I brought my head higher, reaching to tuck the strands of hair that covered and tickled my face when with a heart jolting surprise, I found him next to me, mimicking my position.
He was leaning against the kitchen island too, I wasn't sure if we're even in a close proximity, but I could feel warmness radiating off of him. I was still sceptical on why I could even feel his warmness. My arms were clothed entirely with the dark jean jacket just like he was.
I kept my eyes on the wall in front of me, a counter cemented against it a metal sink stuck onto the counter. Cupboards were built above the sink, in rows that-
"Heather," Cameron said.
I bit my lip, slowly turning to him, looking at his curious expression. I was closer to him in distance compared to other times we've been together, and up close, I could examine his features a lot easier. His tousled hair that tickled his forehead, his glasses that framed his dark eyes. The minuscule tilt of the corner of his lips.
I gulped, bringing my jacket pockets closer together in front of me, so my jacket was covering the front of the dress. "Yes, Cameron?" I replied, keeping my eyes on his face but my gaze was wavering and I so desperately wanted to look away to soften the swarm of butterflies in my belly.
"Are you-" he cut himself off, maybe because of the expression on my face when I realised what he was going to ask and that I was going to have to explain myself. What was I even going to explain if I didn't know what was happening? "Um, Olivia said you had something." He diverted the topic.
The gift behind me was practically begging me to be given to its owner so, I pushed my nerves aside, pulling my hands out of my pockets, clamping them together instead. "Happy birthday, Cameron." I wished him, a small but nervous smile growing on my face.
Cameron's smile widened just a little bit, prompting dimples to dig into his cheeks. I couldn't help but stare them at amazement, having not seen them before. I clamped my fingers tighter when I felt like I wanted to fidget some more.
"Thank you, Heather." He said and I didn't know how to feel with the fact that he'd said my name twice now.
"Well, uh," I paused, keeping my eyes on his quizzical face expression, twisting my torso to reach for the flower print covered gift behind me. "I- here, for you." I said, passing it to him quickly.
My eyes stayed on him involuntarily, as I watched him read the cover of the note on the package, the one where two illustrations of Snow and Brain were present. He smiled a lopsided smile, only one of his dimples digging into his cheek as he raised his excited gaze to look at me.
