14th July 1987:
"Mike! Door!" Nancy shouted up the stairs to her younger brother.
"Coming!!" He yelled back angrily.
Mike was losing his patience because he was having a fight with a blanket which was refusing to fit in his bag.
"Fuck sake." Mike muttered as he threw the bag which was full to the brim of clothes, sun cream, flip flops and whatever else Mike thought was important to take to the beach.
"I give up." He mumbled before picking it up and bolting down the stairs to open the front door.
"Hey Mike." A smiley brunette said as she stepped into the Wheeler residence.
"Hi El." Mike replied, planting a soft kiss on her forehead before catching her lips.
"Ready to go?" He asked, taking in her outfit.
She was wearing denim shorts which showed off her toned, tanned legs and a thin pink t-shirt. He could see the strap of her red bikini on her shoulder and he immediately got nervous.
"Yeah, you?"
"Yeah, just gotta try and fit this stupid blanket in the bag." He announced, trying once again to shove it in his rucksack.
After a few seconds of him struggling El piped up, "let me."
He handed it to her and watched as she folded it neatly with her small, gentle hands and managed to fit it in with ease.
"Clearly it just didn't like me." Mike shrugged, causing El to giggle. He bent down to pick up the picnic basket and grabbed his car keys. They were going to the beach and needless to say, Mike was excited. He had always wanted to take El to the beach but because it was 'too far away', Hopper never let them until now.
They said goodbye to Nancy and climbed into Mikes car, ready for their journey to the beach. It was a very hot day so they had the windows down and were blasting the radio. El was singing her heart out to 'holding out for a hero' and Mike just watched her with admiration, unable to concentrate properly on driving.
He took in her energetic movements and her excited expression. Mike was so focused on her that he only just managed to tear away his gaze otherwise they definitely would've crashed.
Mike had always loved El's voice, she was amazing at singing even though she said she wasn't. Mike could listen to her for hours.
The entire journey consisted of them singing their lungs out to various songs and both of stealing loving glances at each other.
Eventually they arrived at the beach and they parked along the side of the road. Once they were parked Mike got out to open the trunk and El got out of her side of the car, ran round to Mike and wrapped her arms around him. She was smiling into his chest as he tried to regain his balance from the sudden impact.
"What was that for?" He chuckled, kissing the top of her head, his arms still wrapped around her.
"Just felt like it." She smiled, looking up at him.
"Cute." He said. Even though they were here to go to the beach, he swore he could stay like that forever, even if the sun was burning the back of his neck.
"Okay let's go!" El suddenly let go of him and grabbed one of the bags.
Mike frowned slightly at the feeling of emptiness where her presence just was. Even so, he grabbed the picnic basket and closed the trunk, making sure to the lock the car.
They walked down to the beach, hand in hand, both smiling like idiots. Once they found a not so crowded area and created their little set up, they both immediately tucked into the food.
