My heart trembled. I had never been overcome by so much emotion, so much happiness before. The moment he heard my name, the smile on his face grew. He was beaming with a joy so pure it consumed me. I couldn't help but stare at him and see the sun and all of its stars gazing back at me.

I almost wanted to smile, but I had forgotten how. For the first time in years I felt light brush against the darkness that embraced me. It almost felt as though I belonged, as though I was wanted.

The door to the room burst open and I jumped, startled by the sudden noise and pulled away from his touch. A frown took over his face and the light in his eyes dimmed, he had slipped on a mask and I could no longer tell what he was feeling.

I turned towards the entrance of the room and saw a woman wearing a white coat. She looked weary, weathered down by the weight of her age and her profession, but nevertheless she sported a smile, small but genuine. Clutched in her hands was a clipboard as she came over to the bed I was situated in, her heels clicking with every step.

She paused once she reached the machines that surrounded my bed before turning and bowing her head to the both of us. She cleared her throat and gently asked, "How are you feeling, Luna?"

She began jotting down notes on the documents she held, not noticing that I had frozen. I couldn't remember the last time someone had asked me how I felt with my mate being the first person to actually talk to me since I had been imprisoned. I made no movement to answer her, averting my eyes from the two pairs of eyes that examined me. I played with my fingers, uncomfortable with the intensity of their stares. I couldn't remember the last time someone's eyes had landed on me that didn't hold darkness and fury in them. I did not know what to say for I had no clue how I was feeling. I had never been met with so much warmth from strangers and even my family shunned me. But despite all the kindness my mate had shown me, I knew it was only because they did not know what I had done. The numbness had settled in and once again, I was locked in a tower of my despair with no way of escaping.

She continued scribbling away before turning towards my mate and requested to talk to him outside. He looked torn and a growl escaped from him. He turned towards me as though he wanted to say something before abruptly standing, his chair scraping against the tiles of the floor. He stormed away, the doctor trailing after him and once again, I was alone.
