It was dark.
The floor was freezing cold and I could barely see the outline of the cell bars through my heavy eyelids. My fingernails were caked with dry blood from when I dug them into the cement floor so I could distract myself from the pain between my legs and the harsh grip he had on my thighs.
I could hear the echoes of his harsh breathing ringing in my ears. The faint presence of his scent still lingered in the small cell and the urge to vomit crawled its way up my throat.
My hunger gnawed at my stomach, but I knew I wouldn't be getting food today.
There were days when all I could do was sit around and count down the minutes until food would come, but it always gave way to regret once the familiar sense of burning consumed my insides with every poisoned bite I took.
I laid in the silence where the only sounds I could hear were my shaky breathing and the disappointing beat of my heart because that meant I was still alive. I was still here and I was too tired to muster any energy to do anything about it.
Every pitiful breath was another regret that stained my conscience.
It wasn't long before I heard the familiar thumping of approaching footsteps.
My heartbeat picked up in its usual crescendo and my trembling hands moved to drag my body to the corner of the cell, where I knew he would still be able to reach me but nonetheless I persisted. My aching muscles refused to work with me and I felt a hand grip my bony ankle, yanking me towards him.
I kept my eyes on his feet, terrified of the hollowness I would be sure to see if I were to look at his face. His low voice grated against my ears as his hands began traveling up my bare legs.
"You can never escape, Rain. I will always find you."
I jolted awake, sweat beading its way across my forehead. My hands gripped the bedsheets and my body shook as I tried to control my breathing.
His words struck a chord in me because I knew they were true. He found me and he wasn't going to stop until I was back where he thought I belonged.
The nightmares always felt so real. Some were memories and others weren't but they always ended with me trapped in that cell.
Levi was able to chase away the nightmares most nights by simply sleeping next to me but there were times when they slipped through. It pained Levi to see me so terrified and I knew a part of him felt guilty for not being able to do anything about it but he always made sure to comfort me and wipe away my tears which I knew was more than enough.
A light knocking against the door shook me from my thoughts.
"Who is it?" I croaked.
"It's Leila."
"And Oliver!" chirped an excited voice.
"I'll be right there," I answered, shakily pushing myself off the bed and hurrying to the bathroom to brush my teeth and change out of Levi's clothes.
After changing into a sweater and jeans, I opened the door to see Oliver's grinning face and Leila with her usual laid-back smile. Oliver quickly wrapped his tiny arms around my waist buried his face into my sweater.
"The Alpha had some business to attend to so he left a few hours ago and we're here to keep you company..." Leila's smile faltered as she took in my expression. "Are you alright, Rain? You don't look well."
At her words, Oliver's head snapped up to examine me. His lips turned down in a pout and his grip around me tightened. I lightly ruffled his hair and plastered on a soft smile. "I'm fine. Why don't we go get something to eat?"
