I could faintly hear their whispers from outside the room. I wondered if they were discussing what to do with me. My heart hurt at the thought of being forced into another cell and I couldn't understand why. For some reason I didn't want to leave my mate even though I knew he was an Alpha and that he was bound to hurt me. I couldn't bear the thought of parting from him.
I wondered what had happened to my father and the rest of my pack. I knew none of them ever cared what happened to me but they were the closest thing I ever had to a family and it saddened me to think of how many died in battle.
I sat there, playing with my fingers and tracing the scars on my arms for what seemed like hours before the door to the room opened, but this time only he came in. It looked as though he was lost in his thoughts and I didn't want to interrupt, not wanting to anger him. He stood there for a while, his eyes shifting between obsidian and caramel, unsure of what to land on. His eyes locked with mine and all uncertainty seemed to melt away. He stepped closer and I flinched.
We both stilled. He looked like he was in pain and I was confused. I wondered why he looked so agonized when all the Alphas I've encountered have always relished in my pain. He was an enigma. A puzzle I wanted to solve.
"Rain," he voiced. "Can I come closer?"
My eyes widened. No one had ever asked for permission before. They always took from me against my will. I wanted to ask why he was different, but I kept quiet and nodded. He walked over to where he was before and sat, seemingly nervous as he combed his fingers through his hair, my eyes following his every movement.
"I-I'm sorry," he uttered, his eyes searching mine. My face was blank, unsure of what he was apologizing for.
I tilted my head to the side, beckoning him to continue. He looked as though he was struggling to come up with what he wanted to say and he searched my eyes once more. I did not know what answer my hollow eyes had to give, but I gazed back, wanting to be a source of comfort for this man I barely knew.
"I am Levi Carter, Alpha of the Hyperion Pack and you are my mate."
"Levi," I heard my wolf murmur before she retreated. A ghost of a smile graced my lips at her presence and he took it as approval to continue.
"My pack attacked the Prometheus Pack after some of their pack members broke our peace treaty and trespassed on our land, hoping to steal some of our females. The Alpha of Prometheus did nothing to stop it and we took that as a chance to attack since they've been trespassing on other packs as well. We managed to take down most of the pack members save for those who agreed to join our pack and women and children."
He paused before whispering, "Now tell me, why were you imprisoned, little moon?"
