John's POV-

January 10.

A day before Alexander's birthday.

And the day I saw my dad...

I am sorry to report this to you, but I could not, and will not, tell you what had occured in our meeting, for it would ruin certain surprises.

Anyway, a day before Alexander's birthday, and I have not bought a present yet.

I should get to that.

I wave goodbye to my Father and exit the coffee shop, slinging my laptop bag around my shoulder.

I check my watch, 11:00 already?
I have time.

I walk around the streets of New York, looking behind the windows if there's anything Alexander might like.

And I finally found it as I recall a memory...

~WHAT TIME IS IT? FLASHBACK TIME!~

November 24-

"Hey, Alex?" I sat on my bed, doodling on a turtle. Alexander had come over earlier to work on some of his essays.

"Yeah?" He turned my swivel chair to face me.

"So you're 19..." I trailed off.

"Yes..." He nodded.

"When are you gonna turn 20?" I asked. Internally, I was screaming why did I ask that and not something like, "When's your birthday?"

"Oh... January 11." He mumbled, turning back to his work, shoulders tense.

"Mm... Sorry." I said, thinking this was probably a sensitive subject for him, like how I was. "Is there a reason that you don't want?"

Alex raised a brow, saying, "Don't what want?"

"Your birthday." I mumbled, making hexagons at the shell of my turtle doodle.

"My birthdays...weren't always the best." He sadly chuckled.

"Same, bro. Sameeeee." I sighed.

"Bro? Really?" He laughed. "Cringe moment." We both laughed.

"So...what do you want?"

"What? No, John. I don't want presents." He protested.

"Fine." I thought for a moment and an idea came to my mind.

"What's our favorite food?" I randomly asked, smiling.

"Wha???" He chuckled at my random question.

But this is ersatz, or for a different purpose.

"What's your favorite food?" I repeated, now looking up at him, my cheeks on my fists.

"Well, uh, tacos. But I thought you already kne-"

"Shh. Favorite sport?"

"My brain does not process the word 'sport'." He laughed.

This continued for about 5 minutes, every question I ask, he would immediately answer.

Without him realising the question, I asked, "What do you want for your birthday?"
