chapter twenty-six: saving
***
The next days school goes by pretty fast and nothing bad happens.
We are all happy that Daphne is back in the team and Michelle comes by a lot of times to train with the Scorpions. They get really good and everyone is sure that they are going to win the competition and all is well until one day the principal calls me to come to his office.
It comes out of nowhere and we are all really shocked when it happens. There hasn't been anything that I've done for that he could call me in.
I didn't decide to do something good for the school and neither I did anything bad. But he still calls me and I have to leave class in the middle of an important lesson where we are learning things for the upcoming exams.
The first person I make eye contact with is Carly and she shrugs her shoulders because she doesn't know what happened either. Then I slowly get up, take my bag and make my way to principal Clearwater.
He awaits me in grey room and looks at a few papers in his hands which I recognize as my school record. It's pretty empty because I don't do bad things and the things that are in there is just my testimony.
"Hello Mr. Clearwater," I say when he doesn't look up from the papers after I enter. He looks up, scans me with his eyes and tells me to sit down by pointing to a chair in front of the desk behind which he sits.
When I sit down he lays down the papers and looks at me again. "You area quite good student miss brown," He says and the way he talks sends a shiver down my back.
When he doesn't continue I say "I guess so." He nods slightly and looks at the papers again.
"You have good grades, have never been to detention, have never had to do extra work," he reads and looks back up at me, "What surprises me then is that you go against something your principal said."
I have no idea what he is talking about. Maybe it's because I got Daphne back, but I didn't do it on my own so I don't actually understand why this would break a rule.
"I'm sorry, but what do you mean?" I ask when he doesn't continues.
"The competition the Scorpions wanted to go to," he explains and leans forward piercing my eyes.
"Excuse me?" I ask shocked and lean backwards because I don't like that he got closer to me. What does he mean with 'going against it'? I never did anything bad. I just helped the Scorpions to get back into the game after he got them out.
He leans back again and I straighten back up while he says: "You have talked to the organizer that he should let the Scorpion participate even though I forbid it." I slowly nod. "This is breaking a rule Miss Brown and it is not correct."I get really angry because of what he said.
"I didn't break a rule," I says because I know what I'm talking about,"In the guidelines to the participation of the competition it is said that all kinds of cheerleading teams are accepted. There is no rule that the principal has to allow it if the team is from a school." I looked it up just for that case I want to add put I don't because it would get me in trouble even more.
"But it always applies if a school team takes part," he goes back, "Therefore you are not allowed to participate."
I nod because I know that he won't accept if I try to speak up to him once more. And either way, if the Scorpions just change their name they are no longer the schools cheerleading team and can take part even if Clearwater tries to stop us again.
"Well," he continues and there now is a victorious smile on his face, "You may know that a rule break like that can not be left untouched with a punishment. What do you think would be a good one Miss Brown?"
I don't have to think about the question very long because it's obvious what he will want me to say. Therefore I mumble: "Detention."
"Very good idea," he says and takes out a piece of paper to write down the time and place of the detention. He gives it to me and when I read the day my heart humbles. It's the day the competition is going to be and the worst thing is that he wrote this detention slip for all of the Scorpions, which means that they are not going to be able to go there.
I try to save them one last time: "You can't give detention to all of the Scorpions. It was my idea and not theirs."
Clearwater doesn't even answer the question but just looks at me with his cold blue eyes. "Do you want to skip prom as well Auden Brown?"
I slowly shake my head, stand up and leave the office like I'm in trance. The secretary looks at me but doesn't ask if everything's okay. In front of the door Carly and Hotaru are already waiting for me and before either of them can ask what he wanted I give them the detention slip and at first Hotaru is about to make a small joke but then she sees who has to go detention and when.
"He can't do that," she yells and wants to go inside the office but I hold her back.
"I tried to get him to take it back as well and he dared that I would no longer be allowed to go to prom..." She stares at me for a second before she comes back to us and swears about what of a bastard Clearwater is.
While Hotaru wanted to kill Clearwater once again Carly has sunken down on the chairs in front of the office with the detention slip in her hand. I can already feel that she's angry and walk towards her.
"We will do something about it, Carly," I say and try a smile. She looks up at me and in her eyes are tears of anger.
"He will pay for this," she whispers and I nod.
"He will pay for this."
Gif is Carly when she finds out about the detention
