chapter seven: sleep well
***
My gaze is Holding the small dirty spot on the pastel green wall of my room. Last week I killed a fly right there. Now there is the spot right above the table on which my homework lays and waits to be worked on.
While I stare at it I'm not allowed to move so I just sit on my bed like I'm made of Stone. Carly is sitting behind me and braids my hair. At least she attempts to braid it, but she doesn't manage it because of it's length.
"You should let them grow out," she mumbles and falls onto her back. I know that she isn't serious because she was one of the people who told me I should never change the length of my hair after I cut it and Carly normally says what she thinks.
"You think so?," I test her with a slightly provocative smile and she rolls her eyes. She knows that she doesn't as much as I do.
"They're still really hard to braid." She starts a second try to braid my hair and gives up a few moments later. "How do you manage to live with this short hair? You can't do anything complicated with them."
"Yeah, but it doesn't bother me." I grin and she lays on her back again. "My hair looks pretty good all the time and I don't need to long blow drying them." I run my fingers through my hair and look at her a little mockingly. Then I lay down next to her and turn my head that I can look into her eyes.
"Good for you," she says but her comment doesn't sound mean. I give her a smile and she returns it. We stay quiet for a while and just lay next to each other looking at the ceiling and at each other. Her russet eyes meet mine a few times and I get a little lost in them.
"Tomorrow is an extra training right?," I break the silence at one time. Daphne wrote the info in the cheerleader WhatsApp chat a few hours ago because there still is the competition coming closer. It is in about two weeks and Daphne wants to use every free minute to practice their choreography in every free minute they can get.
"Yeah," she nods.
"I think you're really good already." What I say I mean like I say it. They are really, really good. If I'd be one of the judges I'd give them the trophy before I'd even watch the other ones.
Carly still finds something to complain about a little, just like Daphne always does. "Yeah maybe. Amera sometimes messes up the circle part, Nica still looks a little to much like she has a stick up her butt and Oliv still has struggles with her right arm." All of these aren't new things that don't work out well which is one of the reasons why Daphne is often in a bad mood at the trainings.
"You're right." I turn to my side completely and lay my head on my hands. "Maybe we should do some yoga to get that stick out of Nicas butt." Carly laughs at my sarcastic comment.
"Good idea, Auden," she jokes and sits up, "But Nica already does yoga."
"She does?" I sit up as well pull my legs towards me, hug my knees, place my chin on them and watch Carly jump of my bed.
"Yeah. She once showed us some poses." Carly sits down on the floor and begins to stretch a bit.
"Cool." I watch Carly bend her back in a weird way. "Are you preparing for tomorrow already?"
"Yeah," Carly jokes and stands up just to slide down into a split. "It's definitely worth it to prepare twelve hours earlier."
"Definitely worth it," I repeat grinning and running my fingers through my hair.
Carly continues to stretch. "Have you heard about what happened to Daphne's cousin?" she asks. I shake my head because I have no idea what she's talking about. "He's likely to not wake up anymore." The news hit me unexpectedly and I look at her in shock. Daphne had already been struggling with her cousin being in the hospital for so long but for some time he'd seemed to get better. At least that was what she'd told us. Apparently she hadn't told the truth.
