ELPIS'S POV
"How was your trip to town?" I asked my wife when she appeared out of nowhere. She gives her respects to the king and queen before she took a seat next to mine.
"It was memorable. I bought a few things. And I even taught the captain of the royal knight some lesson. I hope the king and queen didn't mind. They were rude, and I only used the back of the sword to make a point." Virtra smiled. The couple was speechless.
"Wait, what do you mean by teaching the captain a lesson? What did he do?" I'm curious. I hope she didn't go too far because we're here not to make any kind of trouble.
"He simply took the blame for the second prince. That cousin of yours was belittling me, saying that a woman like me never felt hardship in my life. I mean, he has never been to war nor any official gathering without his parents. No offence." The king and queen didn't mind at all.
"I will teach my son a lesson. He has no right to look down on someone. Things have changed after I announced the one who would be the next ruler. It's only fair if the throne went to the firstborn because that's what the honour code stated. He has no right to question the code. The last rulers have used it for generations. But the second prince thought that if he managed to lure supporters among the court people, eventually, the first prince would have to give up on the throne." I see. So the royal siblings have been fighting each other just because of a stupid title?
I bet they don't even know how hard it is to be a ruler.
"Why would they fight just for such trivial matters? Do you want me to teach them a lesson since I'm older?" The queen laughed at my suggestion.
"I don't think my sons would survive the whole ordeal. You have experienced the war, but none of our kids does. If it were us, we would let them stand together with the soldiers, but the elders think that it's too early for them. They're sheltered princes and princesses. None of them ever experienced real life yet. We might be the king and queen, but the elders have the final say in any matters regarding the royal siblings." That's odd.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because the elders claimed that they could see the future of our children. That made them superior to us, their parents." I don't see the logic in that at all.
"Bullshit! There's no such thing! The only person who has the power to see the future is the people of the Temple. They can't simply claim that they have divine powers. That's treason!" I placed a hand on my wife's shoulder.
"When Virtra was ill, the Temple helped her to regain her health back. That is why we're in debt with them. The elders have no right to used the Temple's good name for their selfish exploitation! Even if they claimed that they used to work for the Temple, it's impossible. No one can leave the Temple." Maybe I should inform the Temple about this matter.
"I told you that the elders don't even care about anything. You trust the wrong people yet again, my king." The queen seemed a bit sarcastic.
"I know. I've made such a grave mistake." The king sighed.
"Excuse me, aunty. If you don't mind, may I asked a few questions about the third princess?" Virtra smiled. Huh? The third princess?
"Go on. Normally, the third princess wouldn't do anything that gets herself into trouble. What did she do?" Virtra waves her hand.
"Oh, no! She didn't do anything bad. It's just that today she has been staring at me as if she wants to ask me something, but she never dares to do so. Is something bothering her?" The queen looked at her husband before facing us again.
"If I have to guess, I think she wanted to ask you about your relationship with Elpis. You see, my youngest had fallen in love with a viscount's firstborn daughter. But as you know, every young female noble are engaged before they were even born. My youngest daughter was devastated when she knew that the person she loves is engaged to a man far better than she is." I see where this is going.
