"Have a good Christmas?" Maddie asked Emmy over breakfast. Emmy glowered at her.
"No, thanks for asking," She said bitterly, "You left me all my own."
"I, erm." Maddie stammered. Emmy was maintaining an uncomfortable amount of eye contact, which was especially uncomfortable coming from her. She usually talked on and on and on and only ever looked back at you to see if you were listening to her.
"Allie!" Emmy snapped, "Are you even listening to me?"
"Ow!" I said, staring at her indignantly as Emmy had kicked me under the table to grab my attention, "What was that for?"
"Exactly!" She shouted, brandishing her fork at me, "You don't know cause you weren't listening cause you left me alone all Christmas."
"You're not still going on about this." I rolled my eyes.
"Yes," Maddie nodded, "Yes she is."
"It hit me deep," Emmy effused. She had always been dramatic, "Next year, you'd better stay at Hogwarts with me."
"I might just take you up on that," I mumbled, distracted.
"Bad Christmas then?" Maddie asked. I hadn't realised anyone was actually listening to me.
"Oh, no," I said, dismissing it quickly. I desperately wanted to talk about the photo I had found but the last thing I needed was Emmy blurting it out to the whole school over breakfast. Rumours and schools mixed a little too well and I didn't want word getting out. God knows what was actually going on in that photo. I didn't know everything and I was determined to stop my mind from jumping to the conclusion that my mum was romantically involved with my professor! I don't want to go there. Yet.
I had zoned out and didn't want to zone back in as I saw Emmy's lips moving rapidly and Maddie roll her eyes. Instead, I just stared across the great hall at nothing in particular until, quite by accident, my eyes landed on the twins. They were huddled together at the Gryffindor table. They had their backs to me but every now and again they would turn around, glancing over their shoulders. Were they looking at me?
I turned around. Oh right! The Hufflepuff table was next to the wall. Yes, they were looking at me.
I frowned. What were they staring at me for? Whatever it was, it can't be good. There was certainly a lot of that going on at the moment. I still had the polaroid photo of my mum and Professor Lupin tucked in the pockets of my robes.
"Where are you off to in such a hurry?" Emmy asked, one eyebrow arched as I suddenly stood up, leaving the table.
"Lessons," I shrugged.
"Lessons don't start for another 45 minutes!" Maddie called after me but she was too late, "Should we go after her?" She asked, facing Emmy.
"What?" She said, obliviously, stuffing toast in her face. Maddie sighed.
