"Well kids, that's the story. It's only a faded memory now..." you turn away from them, not expecting to hear the sounds of quiet applause.
"Now I feel even worse about breaking that vase..." Jake hangs his head in shame.
"That was truly a beautiful story, grandma. You're so wise. Where is Paul now?" Veronica asks.
"Oh, who knows. The man is still very active for his age. He had a little hiccup with a woman whose name shall not be said, but that's all I know. Now go play, you've heard enough for one day."
You were just shooing them away so you could be alone. Telling the story of Paul and you never usually hit you this hard, but this was the exception. You felt as if your heart shattered into a million pieces on the spot.
The pieces of the vase were still in plain sight. You picked up a large one, one with Paul's childish writing on it. You found the other parts that formed his message:
To my best friend Y/N
I love you always,
Paul
This broke you. A teardrop falls onto the broken glass, slightly smudging the sweet note. Maybe I could fix it, you thought, but you weren't crafty in any way.
You rushed the bathroom and locked it, knowing the soundproof walls would muffle your sobs from your grandkids.
Once again the burning question was asked: "Why?"
Genuinely you wanted to know. Why did he leave? Why haven't I seen him in years? Why is this all happening to me?
You wanted answers. You wanted Paul.
