Chapter Three.
Mave was holding a crock pot, and Sue was holding the identical Judgement Bowl, and a plate with scattered crackers on one side, biscuits on the other. She had upped the dip game too. Carole scrunched her nose to herself, guessing they were fantastic homemade herb biscuits, too.
"Come in ladies" Carole sung
"Carole you look lovely" Mave remarked on Carole's skirt suit and nude heels. She had on large gold earrings, and some heels and a triple length gold chain around her neck.
"Oh I love the blouse" Carole said back, touching the flowing sheer floral blouse, paired up with jeans and sandals Mave wore. Her hair was in a frizzy high ponytail puff, clipped up with a claw
Sue pushed through "Where do you want this?" She asked, the platter a heavy ceramic dish. Sue was a bigger woman, and loved these food fights, she called them. She always came last, but the ladies had all agreed she sabotaged herself on purpose
"Over there"
"Hi Renny" Sue said, a slight hobble in her walk. She had thin bobbed hair and floppy fatty arms that swung as she reached over
And In came Dixie, Betty and Mary, all carrying small plates covered in foil.
"Well, wonderful!" Carole clapped her hands "Everyone's here. Games in the dining room, and food family style on the island?" She looked around for another suggestion
"Sounds good" Dixie kissed Carole cheek to cheek "How are you dear" Dixie's very long hair was neatly neatly back in a bun.
The women stared at Renny, who was absently greeting everyone, still wondering if she could actually, 'go out'. She had become so comfortable in her little home to cafe to home bubble.
"What's wrong with her?" asked Mary, the one who found Renny's "gifts" a little frightening, worried she may be having some vision
"Renny, off you go, get ready we're fine here" Carole snapped her fingers "Go out with Davis, go get ready" She ushered, and distracted the ladies with a presentation of the judgement bowls.
When Renny had come back down the stairs half an hour later she was wearing jeans, but with a clean tight white tee, her hair was straightened making it look so much shinier. She had parted it to the side, had a light dash of eyeliner and mascara to lengthen those already dark lashes and some light pink gloss on her lips.
The women were all sitting around the table gossiping and giggling, there was still fifteen minutes before he was coming and she thought maybe she could dash by the women, avoid the Q and A and wait for him at his place.
The women suddenly went quiet in the dining room, and she scrunched her nose. They were on to the plan, one step ahead and waiting for the signal to execute the interrogation, listening hard for any noise, creek of the floorboards, opening of a door...
She took a breath, listened to the falling poker chips, waited until one of them had to make a move and as light as possible without swinging her arms walked briskly over to the front door.
"You know you have to at least try the dips before you go right" Carole called over
"And didn't he say he was coming here?" Sue added
Renny stood, defeated and turned on a heel, and went over to her mom and her friends.
"Come on, you've got ten minutes to spare us" Dixie said, winking at her "We expect to live through you, you know" Mary said in her teeny pixie voice
