Chapter 30.
He was almost at his door, a six pack in hand when he saw her awkwardl;y walking over the lawn in heeled shoes. "Not now" he muttered to himself, needing to just drink his thoughts away.
He was tired, a long day at work and Ember the night before, keeping him up until almost midnight.
"There you are! didnt see you at the opening" she said a little out of breath,
"Yeah, I'm sorry Miss Carole, Work, couldn't get away. How was it?
"Busy" she said with lighthearted exhaustion "Melodys food is a hit"
"I had that one you left at the door, it was still good"
"I didn't - Renny must have done that"
"Oh" he raised his eyebrows "Well, thank her for me."
He paused, and she waited
"You want to come in?" He asked politely, although hesitant
"Ok, just for a little while"
She went past Davis, and he shrugged, powerless.
"How is Renny? Handling the change ok?" he was concerned she was taking on too much lately. The shop, the garden, Brody.
"Fine"
"Fine?"
"I think so. She was in the garden today"
"Oh. I think the garden is where she gets to see herself"
Carole opened her eyes wide. He said this as though it wasn't an epiphany
"It's going to make it, her garden i've been checking" he grinned
"Not that peach tree" she huffed "i think it's gone. Shame too, she really wanted that"
He had remembered Rennys words, her home would have a peach tree. He reached for a beer, holding one up to Carole
She shook her head "Whose car was that last night?"
He shifted "Ah, a friend"
"A date friend"
"No nothing like that"
"A guy friend?"
"No, a girl but she was upset. Just needed to talk to someone, and it turns out i was the perfect person to talk to"
"What do you mean?"
Carole wasn't going to let this go, so he relented "She's a waitress, at the bar i like to go to. She had a thing for someone, and they had a thing for someone else..." He tried to get around it, without names
"Do i know them?"
He wouldn't lie, but he wasn't sure if she knew -
"Molly" he stilled
"Oh, I see" She gave a motherly smile "And the girl Molly is interested in..."
"Melody" He finished, nodding
She waited
"Doesn't matter. I knew there had to be a reason she could resist me" He winked
"Oh boy" Carole swished her hand
He finally asked "Renny and brody seem to be hitting it off" he took a pull of the beer
"Yes. Seem to be" she lightly agreed
"Work and fun though" he sucked air through his teeth
"Well, he doesn't really have much need to be in the cafe, really. Melody there and all"
"Oh. good"
"He's good, Davis. I know you have this whole 'brotherly love' thing for Renny, but he won't hurt her, i know he won't" she patted his hand
"Yeah, he seems ok. I mean, but haven't you noticed, she changes?"
"How do you mean?"
"You know, the lipstick for one"
Carole chuckled "girls do that sometimes"
"But not her. Sometimes her lips are shiny looking, always putting that chapstick on" he wafted on
"I think she just feels like a change, Davis. Renny has been living the same life for so long, she's finding her new feet"
He nodded, and took another drink
"Ok well i'm going to finish up cleaning, think i'll have a glass of wine"
"Make Renny do it"
"No, she's better in the garden. Besides, she's out with Brody" she made grunting noises as she stood, her joints not as lax as they used to be.
"Oh" he pulled his mouth to the side "I'm glad she's getting out alot, she deserves it".
Carole cupped his cheek "your someone is getting ready for you"
He smiled at that, it sounded like something his mother would say.
They were at the part where Chief Brody was standing ready to shoot the air tank in the shark's mouth, and blew the shark up into mush in the ocean. She had seen the movie at least ten times, but never at a drive in. In fact, she didn't even know there were any drive-ins left.
She chewed on the salty buttery popcorn, and sipped on the coke in the huge movie drink cups.
Brody watched her, her eyes wide and she'd stop chewing when she knew something good was coming up. She was easy to spend time with, but hard to figure out. What he mostly wondered was if she liked him enough, to go to his aunts cabin with him.
The men in the movie were swimming now, paddling to shore and the lights in the parking lot came on. The credits rolled, a few cars honked their horns and engines began to roar.
Some cars were all steamed up, those ones didn't budge. Brody took a sweep and noticed the same thing
"You know you were saying the words along with the movie. How many times have you seen it?"
"Shut up i was not" She threw popcorn at him "alot" she answered
"You have work tomorrow?" he asked, his voice quieter. He turned to her and rested the side of his face on the headrest of his seat
"Yeah, up at five" she pouted
He couldn't resist the down turn of her bottom lip now, protruding so cute
"Up with the roosters" he grinned
She turned to him too, the same rested head on the seat, taking him in.
He was calm, his energy was easy
"Have you given any more thought to the cabin?"
"I have"
"What do you think?"
"I think it sounds great" she smiled, even though it felt forced
He bubbled up inside, and leaned intaking her lips into his, deeper and more meaningful than he had before, she gave in to it, the light gentle stroke of his tongue, his hand on her face, then fingers in her hair.
'Enjoy the kiss' she told herself. "Let go"
She bit her bottom lip after he had pulled back, to look her over.
"What about next weekend then, maybe?"
