Chapter 10.

Davis opened the car door for Melody and put her things in the back of the truck and covered it over. "Where to?" He started the loud engine

"We're north off fifty" she said and buckled in

"Music?"

"Of course" she said "and thank you, for doing this. My brother dropped me off, he was on his way out and now he can stay out" She smiled "He already texted 'woohoo'"

Davis put on country music, the only kind of music in his mind..

She let her hair down, that soft blonde hair fell over her shoulders and she took out some lip balm and applied, not noticing him watching her.

She puckered, and settled back in pointing at a turn off "That's the quickest way" She said, watching the street go by

"I'm not in a hurry" He shrugged and smiled

She blushed, but in the dark she hoped he couldn't tell. "Carole is so nice, Renny too"

"Watch out for Renny" he warned, amusing himself "If you screw up she knows how to give a cold shoulder better than the arctic" he chuckled to himself "I crossed her once. Six months before she talked to me again"

"You live next door"

He slowly said "yup"

"You seem close" She corrected "I mean you are very comfortable, around each other"

"We are, I guess" he thought.

"What did you do? To piss her off i mean"

"Well" he took in a breath "I kissed her"

Melodies face pulled into confusion

"I was drunk, it was two years ago, I had just got dumped and I knocked on her door and when she opened the door I grabbed her face and planted one on her. Good and proper. The next day i remembered what i had done, when i looked in the mirror and i had an eye much like hers looks now"

"Ohhh" Melody laughed

She had a pleasant laugh, a big smile with eyes that closed tighter as she did

"You deserved it then. How long before she spoke to you again?"

"Two months"

"Two months?" Melody was shocked "And you live next door. How awkward" She sympathized

"That's Renny".

The houses were thinning out and the roads were dark, every now and then some critters eyes would glow from the headlights from the side of the road. The land was getting broader and the plots much bigger each mile.

After a little silence, Melody asked "Did you really like that panini?"

His eyes rolled with food memory pleasure "Oh, absolutely. Seriously" He looked at her "I had nothing like that before" He added "And i'd pay twenty bucks for another one"

She laughed "thanks"

"You're welcome" he gave her a nice smile

"Not too far up here" she said "Bout a mile, you'll see the sign on the left"

And sure enough, lit with two flood lights was the sign for "Gruff Farms"

"Why Gruff?" Davis asked

"Our dad used to tell us the story of the three billy goats gruff, do you know it?"

"The troll under the bridge?"

"Who's that clip clopping over my bridge"

They joked and recited parts of the book, as the car sat running in the driveway

"Thanks again for bringing me home, that was really nice of you"

"Not a problem" he said, he could have kept talking to her, then she un-clipped her seat belt. He quickly undid his seat belt and ran around to open the door, and get her things to take them to the door for her

"Can I ask you something?" She said at the door

"Shoot" he said, playing as cool as he could

"Why did you kiss Renny? Back then when you were drunk?" She waited, he looked as though he was searching for an answer

"I don't know. Bit of the alcohol, bit of the rejection, bit of an attitude problem" He tried to joke

She gave him a light smile "Thanks again Davis. Night" And she closed the door behind her.

Davis said 'bye' from the other side, and went back to his car, baffled.

He pulled into his driveway, and saw Renny was still up, in the living room. He could see her on the couch by the lamp, through the curtains. Her hair was up and messy, she had a tank and was under a blanket, holding the remote.

Crickets were chirping, it was a warm night, the street was quiet and a dog barked somewhere down the street as he closed his car door. He looked at Renny's house, and contemplated going in, talking to her, maybe trying to figure out why he did kiss her back then. He hadn't been that drunk since, and he had to question why. Was he afraid the alcohol might make him do that again, and lose her for good next time?

No, he loved her, she was his best friend, his family and the one person he could trust, that one that one day he would tell her about why he ended up in this small town in back woods Wisconsin.

He went into his own house and flopped on the couch wanting to talk to Renny.

His phone dinged as he held it, a message from Renny. She rarely texted him, she didn't like to text, she had told him 'I can't read people through text' She had said.

This night had turned out to be an odd night. He took his beer to the shower.
