Chapter 22
It was Sunday, and the ladies had decided the book club was going to be at Maves house this time. She had Little quiches, pigs in blankets and a plate of pinwheels, danishes, chocolate cupcakes and champagne. It was tradition for book club to have champagne.
"Renny went out with Brody again" Carole announced
"Mom!" Renny piped up
"Second time now" she forked a little of the mini quiche on the plate, the book on her lap
"Ma!" renny repeated
"Did he kiss you?" Dixie asked
"Are you going out again?" Betty asked
"Where are you going for your third date?" Dixie asked "So far the ice cream at the zoo is going to be hard to beat"
"I don't know" renny said "we've all been too busy getting ready for the opening"
"Do you like him?" mave asked, straight to the point
"I like Davis" Sue interjected
"Hold on" Renny jumped in
"Oh he's such a nice boy" Mary added "good job, manners... there's not too many like that any more"
"Brody too. That farm is doing well, and he brought me flowers" Carole grinned
"Flowers? Oh my" Dixie gushed "i haven't received flowers in years"
"Me either" Mave snorted
"Ok" Renny was getting annoyed with the conversation happening around her "the book" she held it up
"Thats the wrong book dear" Dixie said quietly as the women around her continued to talk about Rennys dating life "and we all just want you to be happy"
"Y'all just have nothing else to talk about" Renny corrected
"We do. But there hasn't been any dating talk in years!" Betty smiled "Great" renny said
"So?" Betty encouraged "do you like him?"
She took a moment "He's sweet, and he's very nice"
"But do you like him?" Mave pushed
"Of course i like him, and Melody" she frowned "I'm still trying to get to know him"
"Does he know about, you know" Betty asked
"She doesn't tell anyone that, she's known davis for 5 years and she only just told him last week" carole answered
"Can you.." Betty chose her words carefully "read anything? About him?"
Everyone fell silent waiting for her answer. Renny had information on people that most would never know, and the ladies loved to hear stories about her reads
"He's a good guy" she slowly answered
"We all know that" Carole waved her hand, leaning in
"Ok, well, I did get something" she admitted "his mother and father"
"Melody said they passed in a car accident" Caroles eyes were wide
"They did" she agreed "I saw them"
There was a collective dramatic breath
"Did they have a message?" Dixie prodded
"Not exactly. They're proud, that's all, and they are at peace, together"
