Chapter 38.
She had kissed, and been kissed. Loved and been loved. But nothing felt as right, as synchronized as this. Her best friend, a man for years, had been there for every step of her post Georgia life, the life she was meant for.
It had been him, who had listened to her late at night when she worried the cafe wouldn't work, or when he got Ruby, Renny was there when she picked him out..
The second their lips touched they had both silently signed a contract, sealing how they felt.
They moved to each other as though they had been apart for eternity.
Davis took her face in his hands, and she wrapped her arms around his waist. This, this was how it was meant to feel, as though being torn apart right now may as well be the end of the world.
"I've loved you since you tripped over the moving boxed on the front lawn" He stopped long enough to say
"I like you alot" she joked, in his mouth, sending them both into chuckles, neither daring to move apart.
He moved his hands down to around her waist. He stared into her eyes, and she stared back, as though connections were being formed, new synopsis, new things to explore, new doors to open.
Ruby danced around their legs, finally hoping and barking in celebration - and as though she was supposed to be included. Then she turned to the front door, and began barking at that.
It opened slowly, and standing on the porch in the rain was Dixie, who had opened the door, and Dr Evans, carrying Carole in his arms.
Dixie spoke first "Carole insisted, and he refused to let her walk, so..."
"Are you ok?" Carole looked between them both, her arms around the Doctors neck, her eyes wide
They were side by side, his arm around Renny, and her daughter curled up inside them, her hand on his belly, her other around his back. She clung to his t shirt, "here it comes" she whispered to him
At first she looked worried, then to study, realization and then "Oh!" she clapped her hands and bounced, in a struggling Dr Evan's arms "You mean?"
And the strangest thing happened. A breeze swept through the room, encased and danced around them, carrying with it the smells of lilacs, and roses.
Carole tilted her nose up, and even Dr. Evans seemed to catch something in the air, right before he vocally began straining to get a new grip on Miss Carole.
The looks went from Renny to Davis, who checked to see if they had also...
No one said anything.
"Miss Carole I think i better get you back"
"I can walk silly"
"Well then what's the point of my working out then" He argued with her on the way back
"Well, still I could manage" her voice trailed off
"Dixie took a last look at the pair, staying tight together with their dog by their side. It was a picture, indeed. She smiled, and slowly closed the door behind her.
"Did you?"
He nodded, and dove right back into kissing her.
The next morning Renny awoke to Davis sitting by the bed looking at her, a hot cup of coffee in hand.
Seeing him, that early, shirtless and intimate felt more right than she ever knew.
"Hi" she smiled, her eyes still adjusting, her hair sprawled out all over the pillow
"You look so gorgeous" He bent down to kiss her, his coffee taste awakening her senses
"Right back at ya" she covered her face "What time is it?"
"Five"
"Ugh" she mumbled "I have to go"
He crawled over her. He had never looked better "I can't let you go" he began kissing her neck and her bare shoulder
"You have to for the next, eight hours. Nine if you keep this up" she mused, almost falling into it but she couldn't, her mom was going to be off for a while and the shop was definitely higher in traffic now that there was the new menu. She may even have to hire a new barista slash cook.
He nibbled at her lips, her body screamed for her to stay but she shoved at him, slapping lightly.
He moaned and rolled over
"Don't you have work?" She held the sheet over herself as she collected her things from the floor.
He watched her scoot around modestly
"Course I do. I had to cancel everything to go to my parents, got a heck of a day now"
"Well" she impatiently ushered him along
"Grass will be the same no matter when i get there" he put his arms behind his head
"Hmm" she agreed, more concerned with trying to get dressed under the sheet
"Ok" he heaved himself up, on the way to the kitchen kissed her, slow and deep, just long enough to remind her what she'd be missing.
"Dammit" she mumbled to herself, sipping the coffee, searching for her shoes.
On her way out the door he grabbed her hand, pulled her as close as he could and sent her off with a slap on her behind.
"You're gonna pay for that" she said, going across the yard in the hopes her mother would be asleep. Maybe the Doc was nice enough to knock her out with that 'nice' stuff.
The house was still dark, she tiptoed across the entry to the bathroom and made it, turned on the showeer and thought she had at least gotten away with a morning questioning.
The cafe was extremely busy. Melody and Sam could barely catch a breath, and it was only mid week! News of the food had spread fast in the small town, and they had seen many repeat customers flowing in and out already.
"That's it, we need to hire someone," Renny said by the end of the shift.
Melody agreed "An extra hand would be good, especially since your mom is going to cut down"
"That's what she says, doesn't mean she will" Renny rolled her eyes
Melody had been dying to ask Renny about her glow all day. She had a set grin on her face, extra pleasant and very agreeable
"You look like I do" she figured was a safe bet. Then they had something in common
Then the smile, that had been bursting to come out appeared.
"Finally" she said "I told him"
"You did?"
"Yeah! He kept asking me out every time you and Brody would go out - who by the way is fine"
"Uh" she sagged " I feel horrible, I wanted to ask but..."
"Dont, love is love. He knows that. Just maybe, go easy on the PDA for a bit? He's goofy, but I love him and hate it when he pouts"
"Of course, but how did you know It was Davis making me smile?"
"You never looked like that with my brother, the next day at work"
Renny considered this, and suddenly became eager to get home, to run into Davis and plant a big wet one on him. She blushed at the thought
"Oh boy" Melody smiled
"Before we go"
Renny gathered some paper and a marker and wrote 'Help Wanted. Cook/Barista. Apply within' and put the sign in the window.
"Can you believe it?" Melody asked, amazed at how fast things were moving
"I can, actually" she put her arm around her.
They locked up, and walked arm in arm to their cars "And now, you can believe i'm walking into a gaggle of women ready to pounce" knowing her mother had set up the committee, a so called "rematch of the battle of the Dips" she called it. Guacamole, it happened. Effortless, and a poor excuse, Renny thought, but faced the firing squad anyway.
