Chapter 18.
When Davis saw the headlights come in, and saw it wasn't Renny's car he peeked through his curtains to get a better look.
His heart sank, but smiled as though he was operating two systems, deep feelings and reality. He had considered Renny more than a friend, he always had but he was sure she saw him as a little brother, there was only a couple years difference, not that bad but he couldn't get himself out of the friend zone. But lately she had become more comfortable around him, and to see her now getting out of a car, probably Melody's brother and clearly a date judging by the time.
He decided he was going to text Melody, go out with her and hope that there is a connection. It was almost 10:30pm so he thought it best to wait until tomorrow, but that was the plan.
The next day he left early for work, even before the girls left for their 6am opening time. He didn't want to risk bumping in to them but his scheduling was just so that he would either be early or late to the first client, and he hated to be late.
He started hand weeding a garden at the crack of dawn, the clients expecting a 7am start but he figured if he didn't use the machinery until 7, he could get a lot done by hand.
He tore at Creeping Charlie as though he was ripping the last of his crush on Renny out of his system, and it was working. He assumed Melody would be up, the farm life starts early so he stopped mid tear out and texted Melody
DAVIS - would you like to get dinner with me tonight?
He watched, but no response.
He tucked the phone back in his back pocket and continued the pulling.
By lunch he had checked his phone at least fifteen times, but nothing except a text from the first clients thanking him for having it done before they even got up. He wasn't sure, but now thinking about it detected sarcasm in the text, and would give them a discount this month for the annoyance.
His phone chimed just as he had dumped a huge trailer of mulch on a driveway. It was Melody
MELODY - No, but thank you
And that was it.
"No thank you?" He said aloud standing on a mound of mulch "No but thank you" He repeated, not sure it was right the first time
By the time he had gotten home he was mad. Not only had he seen Renny drive up with Brody, but Melody was not interested either? This was crazy, he had avoided any real connections and found himself wanting that back, to be with someone, just one.
He pulled the parking brake hard, slammed his door and stormed inside, not even seeing Carole just getting to the front door, ready with a wave.
She had never seen him like that, he was usually a calm and relaxed guy, pleasant demeanor and a bit of a jokester.
She pulled her mouth down and walked inside her own house, picked up her mail and sorted through as she kicked off her heels.
She flicked through the mail, "Junk junk junk" she said to herself, tossing the unopened mail in the trash, with one falling down the side "ugh i'll get it later" she flicked her wrist, and went to her bedroom to change.
A few moments later Renny came in too
"Mom" She called
"In here" She called back,
Renny put down her keys, looked at the mail her mother had left for her and tossed her own, but one of hers fell too, the can was too full. She bundled the bag ready to take it out as her mother came in, a velvet sweatsuit in pale pink and her slippers on.
