Chapter 15.
Renny had got out of the cafe as soon as there was an opening. Melody had taken over the cleaning and seemed to fit right in with the ladies, chatting and gossiping happily with them as she did. It wasn't hard, they were like a bunch of kooky Aunts, once you won them over. Melody's food had done exactly that.
She drove the short distance home, the sun was bright and it was a cloudless day. She had the music on in the background and sung along with Adele's 'rolling in the deep'
When she got home she noticed Davis's truck was in the driveway. She had brought a few of the samples home for him, so went over to feed the beast.
"Hi" she simply said when he opened the door, Ruby bouncing behind the door.
She was wearing leggings, ballet flats and a loose white shirt rolled up at the sleeves, her long dark hair up in a high thick messy bun. Her lips were glossy, but other than that he was make up free. and he liked her that way, she came across more wholesome and approachable, relaxed, the Renny he liked best, guard down.
"I got no money, I'm not buyin'" He began to close the door, to Ruby's disgust, letting him know with a sharp bark
"Very funny,"
"Well come on in" He said, opening his arms wide sarcastically
"Thanks" she said, and sat herself on his recliner, a wet nose nudging at her hands for some attention.
He watched her, making herself at home and got a jolt of enjoyment out of it. She was different these days.
"What's that" He pointed at the paper bag beside her, the smell of the contents now wafting from their place on the floor
"Nothing" She said, knowing he could smell it "Have you got pop?"
"No"
"Hmm" she said "Why are you home today?"
She was toying with him, but he was hungry, lunch was a frozen burrito and it was awful.
"Took the day off, Andrew can handle lawns" he hurried "Seriously, if thats food I want it"
"Andrew, he's working out huh?"
"He's great," he said, monotone and impatient, trying desperately not to sound it "fast learner, fast worker... "
"How long has he been working for you now?" She casually asked
"Almost a year. Renny..."
"What do you pay him?"
"That's it" He stomped over and swiped the bag from beside his recliner, and Renny just chuckled at him as he knotted his brows, mock anger at her and opened the bag, one of everything they made today. He took in a deep sniff and let out a long, hungry moan
"Tell me which you like best.."
"All" He said muffled as he devoured the panini with Carole's sauce
"No!" She threw a cushion at him "Im serious you have to tell us, likes, dislikes etcetera"
"MmmHmm" he nodded, taking another huge bite
"Useless" she said under her breath, watching his jaw work at the mouthful
"Why you here?" He asked jumping to the next meal - the lasagne.
"I don't know. We were cooking for the girls, trying to figure out a menu and stuff and the girls started getting feisty so, i got out of there and saw your car and thought I'd come to see what you were up to"
"Feisty?" He asked with red sauce running down his chin
"Matchmaking"
"No way! Who are they trying to match you with?" He stopped eating, and chewed what he had slowly
"Melody's brother" She sighed "Pop?"
He went to the fridge, thinking about that as he got her a can and handed it to her "You like him?"
"I mean" she shifted "He seems ok, but i'm not interested..."
"In dating" He finished "But why? Tell me again" he plucked the bag from the counter and sat on the sofa next to her
She took in a breath "It's just so, foreign, now. I haven't dated in a long time, haven't given it much thought, i guess. My mom does all the thought for me"
"True" He took note of her sudden silence "Can't hurt to date though Renny" he said a little more gently "I'd just hate to see you block out the chance to be happy with someone, you know?"
"Well, what about Melody?" She returned
He grabbed at the bag again, busily shuffling the items to pick his next delight, pretending to ignore her
"Ohhh that's how it goes?" She scoffed
he lifted his eyebrows a couple of times with a food filled cheeky grin. He fed Ruby under the table
"How is that?" Renny indicated the last bite of the bread
"Unbelievable" he smiled "You're gonna be rich"
Renny stood "I'm going home. I'll come help you prune that Basil one of these days" She smiled back
"Pff" he stood with her "you don't know what you're doing" he provoked
She walked to the door "we'll see" she said, thinking about putting some planters together, just to prove a point.
