Chapter 8.
Melody had on tight jeans and a plain tight t-shirt with the company logo on it. She was carrying a basket with some cheese, bread and a bottle of wine.
Davis led her into Renny on the couch. He raised his eyebrows at Renny
"I'm sorry am I interrupting?" She asked, "I stopped by the cafe, I wanted to say sorry again for Choco, and for my brother, he should have known that goat was nervous around balloons, I told him before we left..."
"It's fine" Renny interrupted, before Melody lost her breath "I'm fine" She comforted, and Melody seemed to calm just a little
"I brought you some cheese and some things, to apologize.."
"Thank you Melody, that was really nice of you"
Davis looked between them both and stepped in "Davis, neighbor, friend" "Melody" She repeated, and laughed at herself "I said that, didn't I"
"It was her goat" Renny blurted
Davis looked at Melody, amused "Thank your goat for me" He said, and Melody looked confused
"I'm kidding. Would y'all like stay for lunch? We just ordered some pasta, there'll be plenty"
"Oh, no I better go back to the farm, I just really wanted to..."
"Stay" Davis insisted. He opened his stature and invited her to sit down. She looked at Renny, unsure if she was as accommodating
"Oh! Yes, Im sorry of course, stay, please" she snapped into manners
Melody, not having anything to do back at the farm but experiment with the cheeses, thought for a moment. "Ok then, sure, thank you"
Davis smiled, and took the basket from her "Should we?"
The women looked at him, the room had a strange new feeling to it, not awkward, but new. They looked at each other, and shrugged
"I'm game if you are," Melody said to Renny, who also thought, 'why not?'
"We're all ditching work -" he corrected "sort of, may as well have some fun with it" he uncorked the bottle and collected the glasses, and got himself a beer instead
The food arrived and they found themselves in comfortable conversations. Renny had relaxed after the wine and let herself open up a little.
"Choco's head was up the dress of a lady at a pie stand by the time i caught her"
"I swear it felt like she did it on purpose" Renny laughed, then she yawned, and then stretched
"I think you could use a nap" Davs noticed how tired she looked
"Oh, yes" Melody blushed "time got away from me" she said as she stood, her and Davis cleared "Time usually goes real slow when you're with Renny" he joked
"Thanks alot" she said from the couch.
Davis cleared his throat
"Do you need a ride?" Davis tucked his hands in his back pockets, and then "the wine.." he gestured to the bottle
Renny was brought back
"Oh, no" Melody tucked her loose curls behind her ear "I'm fine, I mean, I just had one, we ate alot and it was a couple hours ago, so.."
Davis nodded rapidly, looking down, searching his brain for something else to say
Ruby stayed next to Renny as she mindlessly stroked her ears
Davis wiped his hands "Good to meet you Melody, say hi to Choco for me" He dashed a smile and headed to the door "Later Renny. Come on Ruby" and without any hesitation Ruby hopped up and beat him out the door. Renny stood
"Oh no, don't get up you should rest" Melody rushed to her side and held on to her elbow
"Im fine, I gotta go pee" she cocked an eyebrow
Melody Smiled, a genuine smile "I enjoyed lunch, thank you for asking me, I needed the break from the farm, and my brother"
"I feel the same about my mom" Renny chuckled
Melody held her hand up at the door, lightly said goodbye and she left.
After only half an hour later Carole came home and swooped into the bathroom to her daughter, whom she was worried was on the bathroom floor after slipping. But she wasn't, she was in a steaming hot tub, her eyes closed, one an interesting shade of purple blue, and her earbuds in, relaxing.
Carole crossed her arms.
Renny felt her before she saw her and opened one eye, slowly. Her mother was tapping her toe but she couldn't hear it through Foreigners 'I want to know what love is'.
"How was your day?
Renny heard as she plucked out the buds, and leaned over, her back instantly feeling chilly out of water
"I was on the couch all day"
"The kitchen?"
"Oh, Davis came over, and so did Melody"
"Oh she came!" Carole clapped her hands together "She's so nice. Did you know she cooks?"
"Ma" Renny blinked slow
Carole paused
"Can I finish up here? I'll be out in ten" she sarcastically smiled
She huffed, and left the bathroom and Renny to her now disturbed bath.
She limped into the kitchen, a little hop here and there, and sat at the breakfast bar, in front of her mother who was finishing up the tidying in the kitchen
"Work ok?"
"Yes, same as always really" She shrugged "Tell me about your day, you had company. How did that go?" Her mom asked cautiously.
"Melody is really nice" Renny said "And no, she didn't say anything about cooking"
"Yeas, she cooks in her spare time, makes things with the cheese. Her specialty is paninis, uses all kinds of veggie fillings, but adds meat for her brother. Anyway, she hopes to open the restaurant at the farm? Maybe one day a bed and breakfast too, anyway - i thought she said something at the goat tent... well you were busy, but It got me thinking, maybe we could add a lunch menu to the cafe?" She finally finished. Melody had really triggered her mom's business brain
Renny tingled. Something was connecting
"Just a thought" She shrugged "but our sales have been the same for years, why not boost them?
"Not a bad idea, i guess" she pulled her mouth down in thought "something to think about for sure"
She listened to the voices inside, as though she was on the right track "maybe we can give melody a call, see what she does?"
Renny chewed on her nail, until her mother slapped it from her, walking to the living room.
