chapter two,
halloween talks.(minor spoiler) tw: billy being creepy and grabbing marleen w/o her permission.
MARLEEN COULD NOT believe that they were on their way to the Halloween party Nancy insisted on. After dropping Will off at Mike's with a promise of being safe and to be at 9:00 pm at the Wheeler's, Jonathan decided it would be fun to go to the party, and Marleen had to come. So, there they were, in Jonathan's car, listening to the radio, Marleen sitting on the shotgun seat wearing a very pink dress that resembled the one Molly Ringwald wore on Sixteen Candles, thinking that she would be only trick-or-treating with kids and then going to the Byers'.
"C'mon, Marley." Jonathan broke the silence, "I still can turn around and go home." he suggested kindly, glancing at Marleen for a second and then returning his eyes to the road. He was as sincere as they come.
Marleen, in response, huffed, "No, it's fine. It just feels weird wearing this dress in front of literally the whole school." Marleen rubbed her hands on the skirt of the dress, nervous about what the drunk teenagers would say about Marleen wearing a dress. It would be embarrassing, she just knows it.
"You look amazing, Marleen." Jonathan said smiling at his best friend, before giving her a cheeky wink. He was the best best friend Marleen had had ever.
Marleen laughed, blush coating her cheeks. "Thanks, Jon," she said smiling cheekily at the boy. "You're such a lady killer," She joked. How Jonathan could turn Marleen from an insecure mess to her usual cheeky self so quickly still stumped her, but she always appreciated it.
"Oh, shut up."
The two arrived at the party a couple of minutes later, parking right in front of the full house. The house was huge, clearly from one of the richer kids of school but it stood out to the others thanks to the countless teens inside and out of the house. It had different types of Halloween decor as well as a bunch of bottles and cans clattered around the grass. Marleen pitied the host when they would have to clean all of this up.
Jonathan, as silent as always, got out of his car before Marleen, who stayed seated for a second, smoothing her dress before getting out too.
The inside of the house was more packed than the outside with drunken teenagers dancing sloppily to Duran Duran's Girls on Film. She saw how Jonathan immediately began to talk to a girl dressed in a rock outfit, so she made her way towards the backyard, where it was quieter than inside and the front yard. She thought of grabbing a drink first but as soon as she saw Carol in the kitchen, Marleen decided for a dry night.
