Chapter 8

Alexa laughed with Lindsey as they ran away from Cory, Her wolf snorting in amusement.  They had covered the beta in flower and he was not happy about it. Alexa missed this, she and her sister would often prank people together. The fact that Lindsey and herself had gotten on like a house on fire meant that Alexa had the bond of sisterhood that she craved. Though no-one could ever replace Elena. 

Running further into the forest Alexa wondered if Gabriel had managed to get the information he needed. Slowing her running speed slightly Alexa jumped into a tree with a grunt, using the branches to balance herself. 

"That's not fair Alexa" Cory panted as he stopped underneath the tree.

"You lose then Cory" Alexa smirked as the beta pouted, the man had seemed to be more comfortable with her as his second alpha after spending the week before his alphas mating stepping on eggshells around her. 

"Yes fine I lose can we get back now Gabriel is probably finished integrating" Cory relented dusting the remaining flower from his clothes. 

"I'll race you back to the packhouse" Lindsey spoke before she darted past them.

"She didn't" Cory gaped looking after the gamma.

"But she did" Alexa laughed as she swung down from the tree and started running.  

It took Alexa a minute to catch up to the gamma female. Alexa could easily pass her but she chose not to. Instead, Alexa ran at Lindsey's pace enjoying the fact that the gamma female was running beside her. As they broke through the tree line several pack members were in the open space of the garden. 

Looking around Alexa noticed a few wolves away from everyone else and a feeling of unease settled in the pit of her stomach. Why would they gather in the shade while all the other pack members were interacting in the sun? Her wolf growled in her mind taking note of the suspicious behaviour. 

"Alpha Alexa it's so good to see you, I see your mating to Alpha Gabe was a success," Said Mary who had approached us while the rest of the pack played with the pups. The orphans coming to interact with the pack members. 

Alexa found this laughable, why was it the rest of the pack were scared to approach her friendly. Most of them gave uneasy or weary glances. Yet without fear the omega female approached and held a perfectly normal conversation with her. 

"Yes, it was thank you Mary" Alexa replied as she traced her fingertips over his mark on her shoulder. 

"The kids have missed you, they have been asking me when you'd be coming back for a visit" Mary Spoke with fondness as she spoke of the children. 

"I never asked Mary, where is your mate" Alexa asked.

"My mate was killed in a rogue attack, he was a gentle soul and died protecting me before Alpha Gabe reached us. I honour his memory by taking care of the pups that have no-where to go" Mary responded though Alexa could see the clear pain in her eyes.

Stepping forward Alexa wrapped her arms around the smaller woman as the omega cried into her shirt. The whimpers and whines that Mary's wolf managed to slip through made Alexa's heart clench painfully. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose Gabriel.

"If you need a friend I'm here for you" Alexa whispered patting the older woman on the back as she cried.

"Thank you alpha, that means the world" Mary whispered back before stepping out of Alexa's arms and drying her eyes as little Laura approached them. 

Before the pup could ask anything of either of them Alexa turned around just in time to see Gabriel trying to sneak up on her. Raising an eyebrow at her mate Alexa put her hands on her hips. An action that had Gabriel licking his lips. Alexa groaned as his tongue swiped over his bottom lip.

"Such a tease" Alexa growled into his mind as he wrapped her in his arms. 

"Only for you, darling" Gabriel responded before he dipped down and claimed her lips. 

Alexa sighed into the kiss her wolf whining with sheer delight. The world melted around her as Gabriel skillfully kissed her. Alexa felt Gabriel smirk against her as she willingly submitted to him. He was the only person he'd ever submit to. 

"I need to steal my mate for a bit. We'll come to play later" Gabriel spoke as he pulled away. 

Alexa giggled as Laura's little face looked disappointed. Patting the pup on the head Alexa promised she'd come back. After nodding at Mary, Lindsey and Cory,  Alexa followed her mate up to his office. Once inside Gabriel locked the door and the window. Alexa frowned at his behaviour as it was out of character. 

"Are you alright Gabe" Alexa tried her wolf whimpering worrying for her mate. 

"I got the information we needed, you might wanna sit down" Gabriel replied motioning to the chair. 

Alexa took a seat on the couch as she took in the expression on Gabriel's face. It was one of worry, rage and betrayal. 

"What did you find out" Alexa questioned as Gabriel took a seat next to her. 

"The old rouge said that the rouge that tried to force himself on you was the rouge leader. After he died his son ordered the rouges to capture you. The old rouge said the son had already lost his mate and losing the guiding hand of his father was too much for him and he went mad" Gabriel began a growl starting in his chest as the wolf within became angry.

"That's not all is it" Alexa prompted as she saw more emotions flash in Gabriels eyes

"The old rouge also said I should 'check my pack for rats" Gabriel continued his eyes flashing gold briefly as his inner wolf tried to take over. 

"Traitors" Alexa sneered the word her wolf snarling in her mind for retribution. 

"We need to figure out how to flush them out" Gabriel finished rubbing his hand through his beard. 

"I may have an idea about that" Alexa offered, getting off the chair and walking over to the phone on Gabriel's desk.

"What's your idea," Gabriel asked confused as to why Alexa wanted to call someone. 

"You'll see" was all Alexa said before she dialled in a number waiting for the phone to ring. 

"Hello, I'd like to speak to my sister Elena tell her Alexa is on the phone" Alexa spoke into the phone as someone picked it up.

"It's me, sister what do you need," Elena asked on the other end.

"Will you make and bring a batch of the 'essence of truth' to the Black Crimson pack. My mate and I are facing a threat" Alexa replied.

"Very well the 'essence of truth will take the rest of the day to make. I will come and deliver it myself" Elena stated before the line went dead. 

"Essence of truth'?" Gabriel questioned tilting his head in confusion. 

"It's a truth serum, my sister learned to make while we were training with our uncle. I never had the patience for it. With the serum, we can flush the pack all at once" Alexa explained a smile slowly spreading across her face. 

"That's great. And for the time being we should pretend everything is fine" Gabriel offered as a grin lit up his features as Alexa's plan became apparent. He'd rather not torture any of his loyal pack members. 

"Alright, my sister will be here tomorrow and then we will know who has been endangering our pack" Alexa growled feeling an odd shift within her body.
