Jude

I was walking down the hallway after school, looking for Ryan, when I heard something.

Am I hearing that right? Is that piano?

I reach the music room and look through a window on the door.

So that's where he's hiding.

"Hello?" I ask as I open the door. I'm greeted by a startled Ryan sitting by a piano.

"J-Jude, hi!"

"Hey! You ready to go?"

Ryan

"Not yet," I reply, "There's one more song I wanted to play."

"Then play it," Jude says as he leans against the wall.

"There's a catch. It's a two-person song, and I only know half of it."

"That's ok."

"It'll sound weird."

"It's fine, just play it."

"Fine," I say as I get ready.

I start to play the familiar notes of the song, it being the first song I ever played on the piano, 3 years ago.

"Wait," Jude says, interrupting me. "I think I know the other half."

"What? I didn't know you played."

"I don't, My mom just taught me this song one day out of boredom. It's the only song I know," Jude replied, walking over to where I was sitting, "Scoot over."

I oblige and soon enough, we're playing together. Our hands brushing together a few times.

We finish and I turn to look at Jude.

Holy shit, we're close.

We lock eyes, our faces being centimeters apart. I decide to take a risk and lean forward to finally kiss him, but before I get the chance, the door opens, and we both jump.

"What's up losers, we're going to the diner," Annita says, looking at her phone, oblivious to what would've happened if she didn't walk in.

"Uh, I'm down," Jude says, acting like the events before had never happened.

"Me too. Let me just get my stuff," I reply, reaching over to where I put my stuff down.

"Annita I'm literally going to murder you!" I say after Ryan leaves to call his mom, after forgetting to tell her where we were.

She sighs. "What did I do this time?"

"I kid you not, we were about to kiss."

"No way!"

"Yes, way! He was leaning forward but then you bursting the door open made him jump."

"Are you sure he wasn't just reaching for his phone?"

"What do you mean?"

"His phone was behind you on top of the piano. He would've had to lean forward to get it."

Oh.

"Yeah, you're probably right, never mind."

I'm so stupid.

"I get to live another day!" Annita says while laughing, snapping me out of my thoughts. I laugh with her, not finding it funny.

Soon enough, Ryan returns.
